The story of the Benders, a mysterious foursome who murdered guests unlucky enough so seek shelter in their Kansas tavern, has all the makings of a great book (and even a great movie). From uncertainty over whether they were actually all related, to speculations of incest, to the daughter\’s supposed mediumship, lecturing on the occult, and communication with spirits, to the actual murders themselves and the mystery of the Benders\’ ultimate fate, and the teaser that Laura Ingalls Wilder\’s \”Pa\” may have stopped at the bender tavern and even might have participated in vigilante justice against the killers….there is much that might have made this book a cliffhanger! From the bibliography at the end, it\’s clear that the author did his research, and I can only guess that, despite the numerous sources he used, the information on this \”family\” of serial killers is just amazingly sparse. There were so many aspects to their story that I wish were filled out more, and I\’m assuming there just isn\’t enough in the original sources to make that possible. It\’s very short, maybe an hour\’s read, very well-written but leaving me wanting to know more!

Im not usually a fan of this genre but a review I read intrigued me. Im so glad I tried it. It was written in a way that was informative without being as gruesome as I thought it may be. Although the crimes were horrific, I appreciate the historical and factual points that were given. For anyone looking for a good historical read that seemed highly researched, Id definitely recommend this book. Fans of the genre should be quite impressed as well.

Audiobook Little Slaughterhouse on the Prairie (Bloodlands Collection) by Harold Schechter
I had heard of and read about this family before, but it was usually just a couple of paragraphs or pages within a collection of true crime stories. To see a full book by a normally good writer made me look forward to the read. Unfortunately, not only was it boring, but all I learned is that to this day no one knows much more about this family than was known back then: virtually nothing. I couldve gotten the same amount of info surfing the web. Also, despite the clever title, this was pretty much unrelated to Laura Ingalls Wilder and based on the ending all the references couldve been out.

Audio Little Slaughterhouse on the Prairie (Bloodlands Collection) narrated by Steven Weber
As a fan of the classic Little House books and T.V. Series, but also a fan of history who knows all too well that there were no \”good old days\” , I recommend this for folks with a strong stomach.

Very entertaining story about true events. Perfect length to kill some time and enjoy yourself between other tasks or events. Easy read that is hard to put down, but not an issue due to its novella length Only negative was that the villains were never positively found and brought to justice, but that is not the author\’s fault
