Plunder Squad audiobook free

Parker gets involved in three increasingly complex art heists, each one with the typical parabola. The first two fail to come off because Parker is too smart to get involved in shaky plans with unreliable people. The third caper, the hijacking of a truckload of modern paintings under the noses (literally) of Illinois State Police, is intricately planned, but anyone familiar with the great Robert Burns poem on the theme of best laid plans can predict in general what happens. I won’t spoil things more than that. The denouement and the action leading up to it are quite good.

Thrown into the mix of this short, but action and plot packed book is Parker’s attempt to track down a guy he needs to kill and should have killed years and books earlier. Both story lines are very well written, with vivid scene descriptions and some really excellent character depictions. Parker comes in contact with well drawn and varied characters, both his confederates in the third heist, as well as some of the side characters in the revenge meme.

There is more psychological depth here than in some of the other Parker tomes. The concluding pages of the revenge subplot are striking in that regard. Additionally, for once Parker is not dealing with an anonymous “city” somewhere–nowhere–in the USA. Anyone who has spent any time in Indianapolis will see that Stark/Westlake has done his research and actually has a feel for what Indy looks like. Similar good writing depicts lower Manhattan in the final pages.

Plunder Squad audiobook in series Parker

This should have been titled “More For Your Money,” because the reader gets three heists here. The first is aborted at a planning meeting for a Mothers Day department store heist, when one of the gang takes a shot at Parker. Turns out it’s George Uhl, who was brought in by one of the other members, unaware there was bad blood between Uhl and Parker. The second job involves stealing three gold statues from Hearst Castle, but this time it’s aborted when problems pop up with the wife of the organizer, and Parker and Ducasse pull out. The job that comes off is for the theft of paintings from a traveling exhibit, for which the gang already has a buyer. It’s a smooth caper until the buyer commits suicide. This novel moves with a more leisurely pace. With the return of some previous characters, the book is more complex than most in the series. Ultimately it has more depth and is more satisfying.

Plunder Squad tells the story of three attempted thefts and one tale of an effort to eliminate an enemy. The story begins with Parker dodging a bullet from an enemy, and ends with him trying to survive a different attack. Parker, known for usually having something go wrong, comments “I’m running a string of bad luck.”

Parker has rules that guide whether he will participate in a crime. The first theft attempt violates his rule against including unstable team members. The second idea violates his rule against including a woman who might become involved in a love triangle. The third scheme Parker accepts only after he fixes problems he sees in the set up. Is Parker getting Desperate?

Audio Plunder Squad narrated by John Chancer

This installment in the Parker series was not typical for me. I am a great fan of this series, but this story was confused and disjointed. The multiple heists that were partially planned and then never went anywhere probably accounts for the confusion. Still, I’m a big fan and am eager to continue. This one just didn’t do it for me.

Donald Westlake, writing as Richard Stark, pens the Parker books, about a professional thief. Parker is rational – he doesn’t kill unless necessary to protect himself, he agrees to robberies when he can plan the caper himself, and once he has decided on vengeance, he gets vengeance no matter how long it takes. The books should be read in order. The character does grow, and the plots of earlier books are referenced in later books. Westlake is a wonderful writer; his characters are varied and interesting. If you like Parker, try the Dortmunder novels for a change of pace.

I love Parker novels and won’t give any of them a bad rating. That said, this one isn’t my favorite. It’s too disjointed and inconsistent in its tone. The spear-carrier characters aren’t as well rendered as they usually are in this series. I’ll still take it over just about any other crime procedural, but it’s not the best.
