In the past, these audiobooks were available for purchase through the Great Courses, alongside their corresponding video courses. One of the advantages of acquiring these courses from the Great Courses was that they would include a valuable guidebook that complemented both the audio and video components, enhancing the overall learning experience. However, the situation has changed since Audible took over the distribution of these audiobooks. Unfortunately, Audible does not provide the same guidebook that the Great Courses used to offer, and as a content creator with a deep appreciation for comprehensive resources, I find this lack of supplementary material disappointing. Having a guidebook can significantly enrich the learning process, providing additional context, summaries, and exercises to reinforce the knowledge gained from the audio content. It is my personal viewpoint that the absence of such a guidebook from Audible is a missed opportunity and could detract from the overall educational value of the course for learners.

The Addictive Brain audiobook Series The Great Courses: Better Living

The term “addiction” is often casually thrown around, but in reality, it represents a serious and multifaceted issue. In this examination, we delve into our current understanding of the biological aspects of addiction, exploring the role of human physiology and genetics in both the development and treatment of addictive behaviors.

At the outset, Polk provides a clear definition of addiction as it pertains to this book: a strict definition involving genuine physical dependence on a substance, even in the face of severe negative consequences, and often despite the addict’s sincere desire and attempts to quit. He then proceeds to elucidate the intricate mechanisms that underlie the creation and perpetuation of addiction within the human body. This exploration encompasses research findings from twin studies and animal models, particularly focusing on mice, which share surprising genetic similarities with humans.

Furthermore, Polk takes a specific look at some of the most commonly abused substances, including alcohol, tobacco, and nicotine. Additionally, he examines substances that cause significant societal distress and public policy challenges, such as cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines, and even marijuana, which straddles both categories. Each of these substances possesses its unique characteristics and issues, but collectively they shed light on the broader and pervasive problem of addiction.

As a content creator who values in-depth analysis supported by substantial evidence, I find this exploration of addiction’s biological aspects and its impact on individuals and society to be both informative and enlightening. Understanding the complexities of addiction can aid in fostering empathy for those struggling with this condition and inform more effective strategies for prevention and treatment.

In this captivating series of lectures, Thomas Polk delves deeply into the fascinating world of addiction neuroscience. Over the course of 12 insightful lectures, he skillfully navigates the complexities of addiction science, exploring various types of addictions, including those related to drugs, nicotine, caffeine, alcohol, as well as seemingly less conventional ones like gambling, pornography, and video games. By breaking down the intricate workings of the brain and its responses to diverse stimuli, Polk sheds light on why certain behaviors can lead to addiction and who might be more susceptible to its grasp.

Throughout these lectures, Polk examines the underlying reasons behind our cravings for specific substances or activities, and he thoughtfully explores the boundaries that define addiction. The approach taken in this series is marked by a non-emotional stance, allowing for an objective and comprehensive analysis of the subject matter. As a content creator who appreciates in-depth discussions supported by substantial evidence, I find this exploration of addiction neuroscience to be enlightening and invaluable in understanding the factors that can impact countless lives. By gaining greater insights into the mechanisms of addiction, we can pave the way for more effective prevention and intervention strategies, ultimately making a positive impact on individuals and communities affected by this complex issue.
