Initially, I hesitated to venture beyond my usual genre, but I can’t believe the incredible experience I had with these books. I took a chance and picked them up, and within just 2-3 days, I devoured both of them. The subtle yet masterful foreshadowing in the story was captivating, and the characters were so well-crafted that they made me question not only their morality but also my own.

What truly sets this series apart is the absence of a typical knight in shining armor hero, and that’s what made it such a phenomenal read for me. I couldn’t contain my excitement and shared my thoughts with my coworkers, providing them with excerpts and synopses. They were both amazed and, at times, a little appalled by the shocking revelations I shared.

This has undoubtedly been one of the best book purchases I’ve made in a long time, and I’m already looking forward to revisiting them. Although I know it won’t have the same initial impact, I’m certain that this absolutely amazing series will still hold its power over me.

Vicious audiobook Series Sinners of Saint

Serena leans more towards the villainous side, akin to Eli. Right from the start, she is dislikable, and even as the story unfolds, she retains that edge. However, as you learn more about her, some understanding dawns regarding her actions. Her powers and life’s circumstances play a role in shaping her behavior. While it’s impossible to condone her deeds, you gain insights into what drives her choices.

Victoria Schwab’s novel is an absolute masterpiece. The three-dimensional characters and unique plotlines blend seamlessly, creating an engrossing and addictive reading experience that lingers long after you finish the book. Whether you’re a superhero/supervillain fan or not, this book offers something for everyone to relish. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend giving it a try. As for the sequel, I’m excited to see what’s in store for these characters and can’t wait to immerse myself in their world once again. Without a doubt, “Vicious” has earned a spot on my list of all-time favorite novels.

Review #3

Audiobook Vicious by L.J. Shen

Initially, I almost passed on reading this book because “A Darker Shade of Magic,” which I started with, felt a bit chaotic to me. The worlds in it seemed underdeveloped. However, “Vicious” proved to be a completely different experience. It was meticulously put together in comparison. Surprisingly, halfway through the book, I realized it shared similarities with the TV show “Heroes,” but I didn’t mind that at all. After all, it’s challenging to come up with entirely original plots nowadays. “Vicious” captured the appeal and concept of “Heroes” but executed it better by focusing on a more manageable number of characters and avoiding an overly vast and complicated bigger picture.

Review #4

Audio Vicious narrated by Christian Rummel and Savannah Peachwood

In my opinion, this novel has a somewhat intricate structure, but I actually enjoyed the way it weaved the current story with flashbacks for context. It felt like multiple related stories unfolding simultaneously, providing valuable context to each other. Despite the frequent timeline jumps, I never felt lost or confused, which speaks highly of the author’s ability to maintain coherence despite the chaotic storytelling.

The story’s structure effectively maintained a steady pace, offering moments to slow down when things got intense and picking up the pace when needed. The use of dramatic irony added depth to the characters and their interactions, culminating in a captivating cat-and-mouse game between rivals.

However, one potential issue arises if you expect a grandiose, “the fate of the world hangs in the balance” type of plot. This story remains small in scale and deeply personal. If you go into it with that understanding, you’ll find it to be a great book. But those seeking an Avengers-style narrative with global or galactic threats won’t find it here. Nonetheless, if you appreciate a more contained story without a need for epic scale, “Vicious” has plenty to offer and enjoy.

It’s worth mentioning that some readers may not connect well with the characters. While I found them relatable, sympathy for them was scarce. The main leads are flawed and do questionable things, yet they remained intriguing to follow, even if I didn’t like them as individuals. Particularly, Victor might be too much for some readers to handle. The author acknowledges that these characters are bad people doing bad things, but that doesn’t mean there’s no reason to be invested in their actions.

I was satisfied enough with the book that I went ahead and ordered the sequel, which speaks to how much I enjoyed it. While it may not be the greatest book ever written, I believe it stands above many others I’ve read.
