To be honest, I didn’t anticipate enjoying this book as much as I actually did. Although the political aspects were a bit exaggerated, I surprisingly found myself agreeing with the underlying message. The entire saga swept me off my feet and captivated my attention completely.

Review #2

State of Terror audiobook

Considering the current state of the world, I was initially hesitant to delve into a thriller involving Islamic terrorism. However, this book came highly recommended, and to my surprise, it proved to be so much more than I expected. Within its hundreds of pages lies a subtle snarkiness from Hillary Clinton, addressing the causes and effects of present-day American political unrest, all while cleverly referencing trending topics like “PedoPutin” on Twitter.

From the very first twenty pages, I was engrossed in the story. The plot is intricately woven with enough twists and turns to satisfy any reader, and it even weaves in a bittersweet romance. The characters, for the most part, break away from stereotypical molds, and the protagonist’s counselor and best friend, a feisty ex-teacher, engages in sparkling conversations sprinkled with literary and grammatical jokes.

While I must admit that Ms. Clinton and Ms. Penny could have sought expert advice on the presentation of fight scenes and the slow build-up of tension, I was otherwise thrilled to be introduced, through the eyes of an absolute expert, to the inner workings of our government and the hectic travel schedule of a Secretary of State.

I wholeheartedly recommend getting your hands on this novel, whether by purchasing or borrowing it, especially if you’re not typically drawn to autobiographies or biographies. It offers a thought-provoking allegorical exploration of how our politics and the global order have reached their current unfortunate state.

Audiobook State of Terror by Hillary Rodham Clinton

The duo of Clinton and Penny delivered a fast-paced, suspenseful, and captivating tale centered around the looming threat of international (and home-grown) terrorism. While it’s a work of fiction, the story presents a chillingly plausible scenario that could happen anywhere. Their writing skillfully keeps readers on the edge of their seats, making it nearly impossible to put the book down. In conclusion, “couldn’t-put-it-down” is the perfect description for this gripping and excellent read.

Audio State of Terror narrated by Joan Allen

Firstly, I must confess that I am a devoted fan of Louise Penny, having read all of her books. Therefore, I couldn’t resist giving this one a try, especially considering the coincidental collaboration with the former Secretary of State and First Lady. However, the true protagonist of the book is the female Secretary of State, serving under a newly elected President who inherited a disarrayed office from the previous Chief of State. The consequences of this transition quickly become apparent. While the book may risk coming across as a political statement, it’s essential for readers to set that aside and immerse themselves in the narrative.

Louise Penny’s skills shine through in the fluidity of the text, and she even treats us to a section set in the quaint village of “Three Pines,” Quebec, with familiar locals from her Gamache books. Despite these elements, the plot takes a wild and intense turn, with plenty of violence and bloodshed, which might be overwhelming for some readers. However, the suspense and gripping storytelling make the book thoroughly entertaining.

One minor weakness lies in the abundance of characters, some with similar names, leaving readers wishing for a handy reference list. Personally, I found it useful to have one on hand while reading. Overall, I would rate the book four stars and recommend it to readers who are prepared for its occasional heaviness. Louise Penny fans will undoubtedly enjoy this unique departure from her ongoing saga of Armand Gamache and the friends of Three Pines. We can only hope that her familiar stories will continue in the near future.

For those who admire Louise Penny’s writing, this story is likely to be enjoyable, although it may not quite reach the level of her captivating Three Pines novels. However, if you’re specifically looking for fresh and unique insights into Hillary Clinton’s experiences as Secretary of State and a DC insider, this book may not fulfill your expectations. It didn’t reveal any eye-opening “view behind the curtain” revelations to me.
