This one I have mixed feelings about. On the one hand, it was quite clear that racism ruled this case from beginning to end, especially with how Nixon was described in the media and portrayed in court. He said that he had been beaten and tortured into confessing to all of the crimes, and the Chicago PD has been well known for incredibly heinous acts of torture, much worse than what was done to Nixon, and was being investigated for brutality & torture as recently as 2016. Not to mention that Nixon was deemed to have an IQ of 76, or that of an 11 year old child (one point higher than Forrest Gump). BUT, when Nixon left LA, the LA murders stopped, and when he was arrested, there were no more brick killings at all. The story, I feel, was well told and well constructed, giving a pretty decent history of Nixon and a lot of the facts surrounding the Brick Slayer killings. Well worth a read and a recommendation.

OK, a decent true-crime book(let). But at each step, as the police close in on the killer, the author gives them rasberries for concentrating on suspects of a particular race… which the information they had completely supported, and which turned out to be the race of the perpetrator. They should look for suspects of other races as a kind of affirmative-action resource dump? That\’s ludicrous and worse than PC. Other than that, well written. Not recommended.

Audiobook The Brick Slayer (Bloodlands Collection) by Harold Schechter
This is the fourth book in the Bloodlands Collection by this author that I have read. The other three are The Little Slaughterhouse on the Prairie, The pirate, and The Pied Piper. This story strikes a chord with me, as I seem to remember bits and pieces of this story when I was a youngster. As far as the quality, and the flow, in the writing, I found this to be a bit aggravating. At just 36 pages, and with a sudden ending lacking necessary details, I was much less satisfied with this volume. BLUSH FACTOR No worries here. This and the other three stories Ive read are written without the use of any profanities or graphic content. Rather than post an excerpt here, if a sample of this authors writing is preferred, please click on the links below to two other books in this series. If you look for my reviews of them, you will be able to get a glimpse into Sheckters style of presentation. This link is for The Little Slaughterhouse on the Prairie – Little Slaughterhouse on the Prairie (Bloodlands collection) This link is for The Pirate The Pirate (Bloodlands collection) This link is for The Pied Piper – The Pied Piper (Bloodlands collection) BOTTOM LINE After reading the first two, I decided to purchase the entire six, including the audio editions. The Pied Piper reinforces my opinion that I made the right decision. I would rate this at three stars. If, though, the ending wasnt so sudden and included information as to whether or not any murders similar to those for which the alleged perpetrator occurred AFTER the man was executed, that would improve this to a four star. Audio The Brick Slayer (Bloodlands Collection) narrated by Steven Weber
This was another excellent short book about a string of crimes committed by what the press dubbed The Brick Slayer. I had never heard of this story, nor the defendant, even though a major a American author had based a landmark work on this subject. It serves as both a case of racial profiling of the time and yet true. It ended a bit roughly. The narrator was excellent as before.

Nixon may have been guilty, but he would never get any sort of justice. I like Richard Wright\’s Native Son about Bagger Thomas, but I never knew this character was based on Nixon.
