The Cows

I don’t often leave reviews but the one star reviews on this book are annoying me so here I am. It’s true. I got annoyed with the characters too. But when I asked myself why I was annoyed I realized it was because they were three flawed women – realistic. At one point or another I find each of them insufferable, but then I love them all again. Then I worry that the author will pit them against each other, but its actually very girl power. Push yourself through the annoying parts because the ending is so worth it. (Also, I read a lot of trashy romance novels so I wasn’t put off by the sexier stuff in this book. Some people might be uncomfortable. But again, it’s worth it to push through the discomfort.)

It started off with promise but so bad I couldn’t finish.
The story made me feel really uncomfortable. The characters were cliches and I couldn’t care 66% into the book what happened to them.
There are some great points, the childfree, feminist aspects of the book. But just a ridiculous plot.

This book has an interesting format – three women in the first person voice taking turns telling their intertwined stories. However, the last third of the book was very disappointing. It went from a provocative plot line to a very predictable romance novel ending. So it is either a slightly better than average romance novel with a modern feminist twist or a mediocre novel that doesnt live up to its early promise. The male characters are pretty flat. If you like romance novels (which I dont) you may enjoy reading this. Otherwise, there are better books out there if your reading time is limited. The writing itself is pretty good.

Ive luckily always been my own person so this book really resonated. Its a great read for anyone with self doubt who seeks affirmation of non traditional choices. I think its beautifully written and very encouraging. Even for a traditional woman like me with a 48 year marriage, two kids and grandkids and a professional career. I made some off beat choices but As Long As I didnt hurt anyone else along the way, I was cool with it and still am. This book confirms that concept and then some. Read it.

I didn’t live anything close to the lives Tara, Stella and Camilla had, but I loved the sentiment, the humor and acceptance exhibited by their tale. The plot twists were unexpected and I wanted to know how these women would resolve their lives. We may not always follow the herd, but we do need it around us.
