I couldn’t put this book down. As a world war 2 nerd I really enjoyed this book.

The author did a great job weaving in first hand accounts of the battles with the overall strategy. Navel battles always bored me but after reading Simons other book “Winston Churchill Reporting: Adventures of a Young War Correspondent” I thought I would give this book a try and I am glad that I did.

It is hard to believe what navel battles were like in WWII. As radar was not readily available in the fog an enemies boat could be a couple hundred yards from you and you wouldn’t know it. I also didn’t realize that biplanes like the Fairey Swordfish (see photo above) was used to sink some of the biggest German ships in WWII. Strange how we far we have come.

I really liked his account of the British commando raid, Operation Chariot. of St Nazaire. I have no idea why more people haven’t wrote about this raid

I had the Kindle version and found it frustrating that there were not any maps of the battles, but I still give it a solid 5 stars.

Audiobook The Iron Sea: How the Allies Hunted and Destroyed Hitler’s Warships by Simon Read

The Iron Sea caught this baby boomer and child of a WWII veteran in its snare. Its story telling is fluid and highly credible including perspectives of both sides, with heroism and humanity highlighted by the Allied and German naval forces. The actual protagonists and antagonists are the naval forces of battleships, destroyers, U-boats, X-subs et aleach with its own personality. I gifted a copy to my 14-year old grandson, a WWII enthusiast. However his dad was first to turn the pages and hooked on Simon Reads writing and story telling.
