The Overstory was written by Richard Powers. The novel is about a small number of people who determine how to see the world and who are worn out into its unfolding catastrophe. The characters become environmental activists for them to defend the wealth of forests, specifically the American West and Pacific Northwest.

The woman who took part in the strive against logging companies settled their ground by wrapping their arms around the trees that were grave danger. They call this action a stick protest.
