The following applies to all books in the series. Donald Hamilton is to spy stories what Mickey Spillane is to de tube stories. All the books are in first person but I have no idea if the views of the author are reflected in the main character or not.

The protagonist Matt Helm is a hit man for the US government. No apologies, no remorse. These were written during the cold war era and the bad guys (who generally end up dead) are Russians or their allies (including US born allies). No weaseling around the issue with “Spectre” type organizations. Innocent bystanders as well as dumb bureaucrats get dead too if the get in Helms way.

Helm is very un-PC. Readers who need “safe spaces” and who fear being “triggered” best avoid thes books. Helms attitude toward women is a bit neanderthal and paternalistic – but any babe that can disembowel a commie or shoot and field dress a moose gives him heart palpitations.

The Removers audiobook in series Matt Helm

I read The Removers when it first came out and several times since. Matt Helm is one of the most interesting and believable protagonists in thriller fiction and this third book in the series is one of the best. I certainly recommend that you read the first book, Death of a Citizen before this one, as Helm’s ex-wife who figures prominently in the first book and is now remarried reaches out to Matt for assistance which he provides in his inimitable fashion. What is sad is that before Donald Hamilton died a few years ago, he wrote a final Helm novel which has never been published and should be. Hint hint. So let’s enjoy the ones that were published and those of you who’ve never had the pleasure of spending time with Matt Helm should remedy that omission as soon as possible. Even though the books were written decades ago, they’re not really dated as no matter how much time has passed Matt Helm is eternal. At least he is for me. Enjoy!

Audiobook The Removers by Donald Hamilton

I just love this genre of story telling and Donald Hamilton does it very, very well. Before ready a Matt Helm book the only exposure I had was Dean Martin in the movies and let me tell you they don’t even come close to the books. The books are far better. The story telling with it’s twist and turns will keep you glued and it’s like ready a story that takes you back in time during the early 60’s. It wonderful and very will written and I recommend it all who life mystery with realism.

Audio The Removers narrated by Stefan Rudnicki

I read this series when it was first published in Gold Medal editions. It holds up magnificently. Forget the movies (with Dean Martin extremely miscast) which were an attempt to cash in on the James Bond craze; they bear no resemblance to Hamilton’s brutally tough Helm. (Of course, the movies’ 007 don’t have much resemblance to Flemming’s creation either.) During the war, Helm was assigned to a very secret service whose primary mission was assassination. Now a family man, he is unwillingly called back in the first novel in the series Death of A Citizen. His ex-wife, now re-married, asks for his help in this, the third novel in the series. Throughout the series, Helm emerges as a real three-dimensional character, unsentimental and doing his job in the manner of Hammett’s Continental Op.

The Removers offers all the qualities of a Matt Helm story, a good spy yarn, fast paced storytelling, and sufficient character development to keep suspense high. As always Helm is the center, a flawed but sympathetic character who combines a penchant for brutal violence with a qualitythat one might call virtue. This is James Bond done better. This story magnifies the qualities of a Helm tale because Matt is defending his estranged family from a threat that is for him personal but also involves a danger to the nation as a whole. If you like Bond, try Helm; you might find you like these stories even more.
