I have been reading this series off and on for several years. The stories are filled with believable characters and the historical backgrounds add another layer of interest. This volume involves the characters in the upheavals of the French Revolution. It moves back and forth between the “bastard” line of the family residing in France (the tangled thread) and the Morland family residing in the Yorkshire region of England as both families face the political and social changes occurring at the end of the 18th century. I found the story of Lucy Morland, who runs away posing as a boy to become a surgeon’s mate, most enjoyable as she defies convention and her family to use her gifts and be her true self. Her story becomes a mirror of the changing nature of the world the Morland Dynasty find itself in.

The Tangled Thread audiobook in series Morland Dynasty

In Paris in the year 1788, Henri-Marie Fitzjames Stuart, Comte de Strathord, last of the male Stuart line, albeit on the wrong side of the blanket, has allowed his daughter Heloise to leave her convent to live with him in the home of friends, members of the French nobility. Times of great trouble are approaching with the beginning of the French revolution, so the Comte marries Heloise to an up and coming member of the new order, at the tender age of 14, as he fears for their safety and needs to see her cared for by a caring husband, Unfortunately, the husband proves to be a beast so Heloise and her maid flee to England on a ship which is wrecked on the English coast. They are taken to Morland Place where Jemima and her family love their newly found cousin, especially James who falls for her completely. News arrives of the executions of the royal family and the nobility, including Heloise’s father and husband. It’s a very action packed story which I consider to be the best yet in the Morland family series.

Audiobook The Tangled Thread by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles

For anyone who loves Historical fiction this series is a must. The Morland family’s fortunes throughout history is fascinating. Set within the facts of the history at the time, involving family members with known historical figures gives a feeling of actually being there. In this particular episode the spelling errors in the kindle version were not so much in evidence, which helped, it did not detract attention from what you were reading! The author has researched so thoroughly, and her skill at weaving fact with fiction is believable.Information on the French revolution brings to reality the horrors of living through that time – get rid of the monarchy and replace it with a republican government shows it is only replacing one power hungry person with another! If we do not learn from history then heaven help us. A really good read and education. I am now moving on to The Morland Dynasty 11.

Audio The Tangled Thread narrated by Christopher Scott

I enjoy reading the Morland Dynasty books and there is nothing wrong with the storyline.

However the conversion to an ebook is absolutely dreadful. No-one has proof-read the Kindle version. Reading it is a very stop/start affair as you constantly come up against bizarre words within the text. I can manage to translate tide into title (it comes up so frequently) but some words leave me completely baffled – spoiling the flow of the story. The Kindle book was not a cheap option and I feel cheated.

I am bitterly disappointed with this Kindle book and certainly will not be purchasing anymore Morland books on Kindle. Shame on the publishers! It is appalling.

Update:
I contacted the author with this complaint and the publishers have been in touch saying that I should soon be able to download a corrected version for free.

Reminiscent of A Tale of a Two Cities! -Paris and London during the years of the French Revolution. How it impinged on the lives and loves of the various branches of the Morland family. I couldn’t put it down and ‘turned’ the Kindle page looking forward to the next chapter to find I’d finished the book!
