The Tattooist of Auschwitz
It was the April of 1942 when a Slovakian Jew named Lale Sokolov was forcibly transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau’s concentration camps. It got discovered by his captors that he can speak multiple languages. Therefore, he was made to work as a Tatowierer, which is the German translation o tattooist. He was given the task to mark all of his fellow prisoners permanently.
Lale was imprisoned for more than two and a half years. During that time, he saw some horrific scenes of barbarism and atrocities. At the same time, he also witnessed some outstanding gestures of compassion and bravery. He risked his own life and maximized his privileged position to exchange money and jewels from the deceased Jews for the sake of food.
He did that to help all his fellow prisoners. One day, Lale comforted a young prisoner woman who was waiting for her turn to get tattooed with her allotted number. Her name was Gita and an incredible love story started after their first encounter.
