4.5 Stars I know everything about you, Violet. But what do you know about me? Violet Young, a beach blonde, perfectly sculpted model of a woman, is a mommy vlogger and influencer who overtakes and lights up the internet with invigorating flourishes of bright intensity in that many woman watch and find themselves falling prey to her captivatingly beaming, effervescent allure, as they little by little begin to even yearn to be her and live her life for just one day, a life that involves an equally as picture perfect husband named Henry to come home to. However, one day the world wakes up and she has completely wiped her entire internet presence as if it never existed. Gone without a trace. Her once continuously active stream of social activity and ever-expanding collection of videos that splashed themselves across countless screens comes to a disruptive, speculative quiet as people hushedly among themselves, in person and over forums, discuss her whereabouts and untimely, jarring disappearance. The mystery she leaves in her wake leaves people to guess if something far more sinister is going on behind the staunch protection and vault of closed doors. Surface beauty being marred and stilled by uncertain realities that plummet us, as readers, to the depths of a waiting, irresolvable darkness. Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die. Two women, Lily and Yvonne, majorly narrate the story as they both follow Violets videos for different reasons. Lily is a single mother who struggles with alcohol addiction and holding a ho-hum job that doesnt particularly excite or engage her, as she longs to feel the warming blanket comfort of a fellow mother, like Violet. Violet, who she believes will pull her out of her detached, dejected alienation and perpetual slump as Violet herself has struggled with postpartum depression and is someone who she also cant help but consider her flower name soul twin in a turn of kismet that she eagerly embraces. Violet soothes her immeasurably, balms the lonely parts of her soul and lifts her up again. However, as Violets life improves dramatically before her very eyes she cant help but feel left behind and heatedly remarks upon how good Violet appears to have it in comparison to her own life that is continually falling to shambles. Yvonne, on the other hand, is a photographer who has been struggling to get pregnant and watches Violets videos almost out of a level of lingering, acridly cutting bitterness and resentment that she holds for her, which continues to build and build, as she seems to live a life that Yvonne cant, a life that involves children, which she waits for and needily anticipates with bated breath. What have you done to her? I whisper. Could one of these women in their seemingly innocent vested interest in Violets life, although at times also fueled by negativity and antipathy, become led by an obsession that turns and evolves into something far more violent underpinning it? Or is Violets disappearance more of an inside job? Could any of the above even be true? Page after riveting page youll have to find out what is lurking behind all the decisive silences from Violets end and heated gossip that could just get out of hand and take a turn for the rancidly poisonous. Unfollow Me is cleverly paced and ingeniously built up with an intricate, nicely laid out feng shui of sweeping smoothness. All of the characters felt authentic and fully formed, each having challenging to work through flaws, as they use lies for comfort and act in betrayal of those who they claim to love most. If you want to lose yourself in the throes of a rich escapism, which also touches meaningfully on the dangers of social media and how we stringently curate our presences online or even dont protect our privacy like we should, giving too much access to ourselves, this is a wonderful book to do it with that I would highly recommend!

Violet Young is everyones favorite mommy vlogger. She shows her perfect life with her perfect kids and her perfect husband in their perfect home. And then the unthinkable happens: Violet deletes her channel. Just like that. Gone. No reason, no explanation. Why on earth would Violet destroy a successful career as an influencer? What about her sponsorships, her livelihood, her fans? What of her fans? Enter Yvonne and Lily. They dont know each other, but they have one thing in common: theyre both obsessed with Violet. They want to know whats going on, and they will get to the bottom of it. One of them knows Henry, Violets husband, and knows more or less what happens behind closed doors in the Young home. UNFOLLOW ME is a riveting and thought-provoking book about social media influencers and their not-so-honest lives. It also delves into darker subjects, like stalking and trolling. The message is unmistakable: mommy vlogging is a big no-no. Exploiting your children for clicks and monetization is super sketchy on so many levels. Myka Stauffer springs to mind, but I digress. This part of the novel is awesome, and I recommend everyone to read this if you want smart social commentary on bloggers and their fake lifestyles. (Another good thriller on influencers is FOLLOW ME by Kathleen Barber.) The female leads shine with their complexity. One of them is a twenty-something single mother with abandonment issues and the other is a forty-year-old married woman hoping to have a child. Love them both. Downsides? It drags toward the end. The pacing was so slow that I almost skimmed through the last pages. Glad I didnt. UNFOLLOW ME is great. Read it if youre one of those YT viewers who wish they had the awesome life of some influencer or other. Three out of five green smoothies!

Audiobook Unfollow Me by Charlotte Duckworth

You cant stop watching her. Violet Young is a hugely popular journalist-turned-mummy-influencer, with three children, a successful husband and a million subscribers on YouTube who tune in daily to watch her everyday life unfold. Until the day shes no longer there. But one day she disappears from the online worldher entire social media presence deleted overnight, with no explanation. Has she simply decided that baring her life to all online is no longer a good idea, or has something more sinister happened to Violet? But do you really know who Violet is? Her fans are obsessed with finding out the truth, but their search quickly reveals a web of lies, betrayal, and shocking consequences My Thoughts: What is the pull that online fans have to Violet, a mummy influencer who is someone to envy? Do they really adore her, or are they just hoping she will fall on her face? Initially, we meet a couple of fans: Yvonne and Lily. They each have their individual stories. One seems to be a true fan, but the other could be out to get Violet. Alternating narratives lead us through the story and the pitfalls they each have stumbled over. Who has the most to gain by Violets destruction? Something dark has happened to explain why Violet has disappeared, and as we peek into the world of fans Yvonne and Lily, we finally understand their motivations. As Unfollow Me finally concludes, with many secrets revealed, each of the women we have followed along the way has faced major changes that scare them away from the world of online stalking. Will they redeem themselves,or just turn the page to a slightly different venue? 4.5 stars.
