I adore the characters who inhabit Briar Creek. Lindsey, Sully, Robbie, Emma, Ms. Cole, Heathcliffe, Beth, and the list goes on. Spending time with these folks is a pleasure. Stalker and murder in this one. Starts off tense, but the whodunit is way too easy. Yes, Ms. McKinlay has a trick up her sleeve, but it’s not enough to satisfy this mystery buff. She described the awful heat wave and drought in town. A definite read for fans of the series. Looking forward to the wedding more than ever — just hope the mystery is more exciting.

Word to the Wise series Library Lover’s Mysteries

I have been waiting some time to get my hands on Word to the Wise, the 10th book in Jen McKinlay’s wonderful A Library Lover’s Mystery series. I adore the series and Word to the Wise not only does not disappoint, it is my new favorite. These books are the epitome of a outstanding cozy mystery series and are among my absolute favorites for the wonderful friendships as much as for the fascinating mysteries. I love Lindsey and Sully and their friends are just as great.

Lindsey is beleaguered with a frightening, real world problem that too many women face today, stalking. Also all too realistic is the way the mayor, her boss, blows off her concerns, leaving the librarian to deal with this invader in her life, except this is the wonderful world of cozy fiction where friends stand up for one another. Even with friends believing her and willing to run interference, having a stalking show up every time she turns around has Lindsey sweating more than the intense summer heat. Naturally, Sully is ready to come to the rescue and warns off the man and just as naturally, the stalker turns up dead the next day.

Audiobook Word to the Wise by Jenn McKinlay

I’ve read the 1st 10 books in the series. The author should teach writing because she certainly knows how to make a book impossible to put down. Even though I guessed the culprit, which I almost never do, I stayed up late to keep reading. Even when (in a previous book) there was an irritating love triangle, I kept reading.
This author definitely has a gift for writing. Thoroughly enjoy the series. After I read the final two books, I’ll have to catch up on my sleep. Highly recommend!!!!

Audio Word to the Wise narrated by Allyson Ryan

Jenn McKinlay has done it again! Word to the Wise has great characters, her trademark humor, nail-biting suspense, a dose of romance, and yummy recipes! (Did I mention a cute dog?) Library Director Lindsey is (finally!) getting ready to marry Sully. In the middle of picking out a dress and other wedding necessities, she begins to wonder if she’s becoming a bridezilla when all plans are brought to a screeching halt by a weird new library patron who becomes enamored with Lindsey and begins stalking her. The library staff, Sully, Police Chief and others rally around to put a stop to the creep. But then he’s found dead, and Sully becomes a suspect. McKinlay skillfully weaves a suspenseful story, with a few twists and turns that keep the reader guessing. McKinlay’s descriptive writing makes me want to take a trip to Briar Creek to meet Lindsey and company, go to a crafternoon, and take a trip around Thumb Islands! I hope I get invited to the wedding, too!

I love all of this author’s series, but the Library Lover’s Mysteries are my favorites. And this particular book is my favorite so far. The characters and the setting are lovely, especially love the changes to Ms. Cole throughout the series. But what I appreciate most about this particular book is that the author chose to tackle the subject of stalking and harassment. It is an insidious crime that destroys the victim’s confidence and sense of safety and well-being, even to the point of victim’s moving and changing their names. And to add insult to injury so many outsiders consider that it is nothing and that the victim is exaggerating and should just be flattered. Nothing could be further from the truth! I applaud Jenn McKinlay for tackling the subject and for doing it in such a sensitive manner, especially showing the upheaval to a victim’s life and career.
