Chosen By A Beast (Hearts Of Stone #1)

I need to preface this review with the information that I have loved all the romances by Miranda Bridges that I have read in the House of Kaimar sci-fi romance series. My problem with this novel stems from my personal loathing of cultures that openly practice slavery and the systemic exploitation of women. This novel never addresses the moral problem of slavery or the exploitation of the women classified as breeders in this society. In fact, this novel has the background information that this culture bought a whole spaceship cargo of enslaved human women to exploit as slaves who then infected the tribe with a human disease which wiped out most of the tribe\’s women and children. This incident is positioned by the author as supposed to make us understand or sympathize with the alien tribe\’s hostility toward human women. For this reader, all it did was make me regret that this human disease spared most of the men. In my opinion, this tribe only got what they deserved for practicing slavery in the first place. The heroine is completely unconcerned with the suffering of the human women chosen by these males as breeders, too. Breeders in this culture are women who are breeding slaves who will have their male children forcibly taken away from them. Also, a woman\’s consent is completely missing from this culture\’s marriage ceremony. Honestly, in my opinion, the only acceptable Happy Ever After for this novel is the human breeders and slaves executing all the males in the tribe. For this reader, slavery has no business in a romance novel, which is supposed to showcase women triumphing over patriarchy and getting their HEA. The hero of this novel was fairly sweet and devoted to the heroine. The characterization of the hero and heroine was well done, with both hero and heroine being vibrant distinct individuals. I personally disliked this heroine a lot for her passivity and acceptance of this terrible culture, but there are many women like that in real life, so her characterization was very well done. The world building in this novel was also very well done, with the alien wildlife and primitive village culture richly drawn. This novel would have been five stars for me if this culture did not enslave and exploit women as a matter of course. I took off two stars because this novel portrays sexual and labor slavery as a perfectly normal and acceptable activity. Other readers who aren\’t triggered by slavery in their romance novels would probably quite enjoy this novel, because it is quite well written. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I liked the concept but the heroine is just crude and the writer can\’t work with some fluency beyond four letter words . I wish the heroine was better than just a crude bitch.

Makayla is told she has to go through the jungle to the village. If she makes it, then she can join the Boraq tribe. When she gets there, she is told she has three choices; slave, breeder, or wife. She lucks out and she is chosen as a bride. Oh, boy! Does she ever! Jazar, the king chooses her and she can\’t understand a word he says. But some things don\’t need words. She feels free enough to tell him things otherwise she wouldn\’t. After their first cougling, he talks to her in English. He had understood every word she had uttered. But she has other fences to hurdle until she confesses her feelings and her fears. But all goes well, even after she is set-up by a female who wants her dead. But it back fires on her and Makayla is saved. You will have to read the book and it is a good one. I recommend it and I have already ordered the next book in this series. There are a few sexy parts, so I guess it should be an over 18years old + book.

This was a fun book to read! I bought this first one, and the second in the series. The other two were too quick with the whole sexual side of things – and the OCD chick was annoying as heck! (IMO) After KUing #3 and #4 in this series knew I wouldn\’t bother re-reading. This one and #2 I will absolutely though! Side Opinion: I wish some of these newer authors could drag out the flirting/sex scenes a bit. Everything happens so fast, it\’s actually really hot to read about the developing feelings, not just have them jump into bed like a common street…well. You get the idea. 😉

This book should have been marked for young adults. The maturity level just was not there. The author needed to pull back on the heroines attitude and language – which proves the maturity level is not there – and let some of the other characters shine.. The story, the plot, was there. It might have fared better in the hands of a more mature author – and perhaps Miranda will do a retake on this story in the future. Way in the future.
