Final rating: 3.5

In my opinion, Yield the Night offered a slightly more exciting and enjoyable addition to this series than the previous two books had. While it certainly improved on some weaker aspects, I found I enjoyed this most whenever quick, easy-to-follow action scenes popped up to break up any calm, slower segments. Those are times when the writing excels and I am wholly invested in the story. Often the large-scale, drawn-out battles/action scenes leave me feeling overwhelmed at trying to follow everything that’s happening and some of the slower-moving chapters fail to hold my interest for an extended period of time.

Romance
I was glad to see the main romance is starting to take more of a central role – even if it’s a bit shaky due to the dangerous nature of daemons and the characters’ desires to protect each other even at the risk of their own lives/safety. However, I am noticing that some of the situations that Ash and Piper find themselves in are repetitive to the point that I can frequently predict the outcome of these tense moments because the characters end up making similar choices over and over. Now, these scenes are well written and I’m still rooting for this couple, but I’d like to see them put in different scenarios for a change.

General likes/dislikes
As a character, Miysis has both aggravated and surprised me. His importance to the story has slowly been increasing since book 1 and he plays a fairly pivotal role here. So far, I find his arc to be among the more unpredictable and I appreciate that. I also liked the revelation of the power behind the Sahar stone and why Piper is unique in being able to awaken/access it. My least favorite aspect was the whole Gaian storyline. While I did appreciate how Piper was presented with an alternate way of thinking about the daemons and their role on Earth, I ultimately felt that too much time was spent there. Since we got to visit the Underworld in the previous book, it seemed that a trip to the Overworld was in order. I always like the creativity that Annette Marie shows with these worlds and the aspects that make them different and the uniqueness of the inhabitants.

Sequencing and plot
It’s nice that this series flows from one book to the next without major time jumps or interruptions, but I’m not always able to recall information about previous events (what happened, when they occurred in the timeline, etc.) which was occasionally frustrating. Even though the primary storyline isn’t over, I appreciated how some of my questions were answered and some of the problems facing the characters were solved before the last book. As with the previous installments, there were still times where things happened quite conveniently and twists that I either anticipated or wasn’t terribly surprised by. However, I acknowledge that there’s a lot of positive aspects about this series. I would definitely encourage anyone who might feel frustrated with the first two books to persevere until you read this one as I see it as the strongest addition so far.

This series have me simi hyperventilating throughout the whole story, its holding me there on the edge and I can’t stop reading reading reading.

Here’s some of the story that made me smile or grin

Piper stared at the bare wall across from her and wondered why the hell these things kept happening to her. Abducted again, less than twelve hours after arriving home. It wasnt fair.

Quinn had informed her that Mona was insane. Piper didnt know whether that was true but there was a good chance her mother was a few cards short of a full deck.

Is that it? she asked.
He glanced back, brow furrowed. Is what it?
Arent you going to offer to wash my back in the shower? Or warm up my bed for me? Oryou knowsomething inappropriate?
His eyes glinted as he grinned wickedly. Is that an invitation?”
No. She raised her eyebrows. Just wondering if you were feeling all right. Its not normal for you to be so well-behaved.

Hold on a minute. Lyre folded his arms across his chest and scowled. How come when he tells you to take your clothes off, youre all, Sure, no problem?

Audiobook Yield the Night by Annette Marie

Book Review- Yield the Night by Annette Marie

In the third book of the Steel and Stone series, Piper comes back a day early to celebrate her birthday. When she gets home no one is there. A couple of daemons including Kindra and a haemon. She is a bit hurt when neither her father nor her uncle are home. After she goes to her room and finds a secret message she is guessing from Lyre, an explosion rocks the building. The consulate starts collapsing and fire consumes part of the building.
Piper is able to escape and get Kindra out. They fled to safety but are confronted by those behind the attack. Piper is shocked when she learns who is behind it all. She is taken prisoner and comes face to face with her mother. Her mother wants her to join the Gaians. They have plans to regulate daemons. Piper is tempted but turns them down. She knows it is suicide to unlock her powers.
The ultimate betray occurs when it is done against her will. Ash and Lyre come to her rescue. The race is on staying away from Samuels assassins and finding a way to save Piper before her unleashed powers kill her.
I love this series. Piper almost lets her loneliness get the best of her but came through. I feel bad about how she ended up in her current situation. No one really wants her or they want to use her. I am rooting for her from the start. I love her relationship with Ash. They are an odd couple but they are there for each other. The wrench is Ashs sister. She is hostile and thinks Piper is a bad influence.
The tension between the two women is thick and the boys are clueless. Piper is strong and trying to survive her situation. Ash comes to protect her. In the end when she figures out what she is and how she feels, she makes the ultimate sacrifice to protect the ones she loves.
I cant wait to see what happens next. This was a great read and addition to the series. I give it a 4.5 out of 5.

Audio Yield the Night narrated by Jorjeana Marie

This installment finally sees some definitive action in the way of romance thats been building- But by the end of the book Im not so sure its the direction I was hoping for, yet somehow this only adds to the appeal.

Piper makes some huge strides in finding her strength and independence in Yield the Night. The trials and difficulties she overcomes are incredible, but she sees each through whether she succeeds or fails, and grows from them.

Witty, engaging and truly revealing in the depth of her love for both Ash and Lyre, Piper learns some terrifying things about her origins and the things she must do to ensure her own survival. This book is a huge turning point in the series and in the development of relationships both romantic and platonic.

Every now and then I come across a book that is incredibly special, a book that has that indescribable sparkle and shine that gives you the warm fuzzies inside, where the writing, the world and the characters blow your mind away. I know then that this is one very special author. For me that was Chase the Dark, one of my favourite books of last year. I have been lucky enough to receive Yield the Night as an ARC, and just let me tell you that each book gets better and better. Holy Moly, I want to stand on a rooftop and yell how bloody brilliant this book was!

I’m not sure I’m very good at doing justice as to why this book was so good but I’ll try. Firstly Piper, I love her to bits, I can see her so clearly in my head, how she looks, behaves and comes across to the world at large. I just want to be her friend. Piper grew a lot, and I mean a LOT in this book and changed in ways beyond her imagination, but she stayed true to herself and just when you thought, ok, how many times can a girl get rescued and be taken down kicking and screaming, she kicked some awesome ass. She learns a lot about herself, both physically and emotionally and she is not afraid to learn from her mistakes and move forwards. I felt myself laughing, despairing and crying along with her. I felt this was a very emotional book and it touched me on a deep level.

I cannot forget Ash either, he is every bit a hero, ok maybe a bit twisted and dark (the best kind really) but he is there for Piper in every way possible and he stole my attention and my heart every second of page time. Lyre too we are learning is not the shallow incubus character that we thought he was and he kicks some major ass. He also gives some of the best laughs. Seiya is a character that makes Annette Marie stand out as an author, how can I want to hug and kill a character all at the same time? There is some major conflict here that I can’t wait to see more of. The supporting cast too are amazing and as we see them all through Piper’s eyes I changed my times so many times about them all. There is nothing predictable here.

To be honest not a huge amount happens in terms of events in this book but SOOO much happens. So much is said with so little, the true art of a story unfolding before your eyes. We have incidents with the Gaians and the Ra, both pushing the story along in ways I had not foreseen. I would not want to be in Piper’s head trying to figure it all out! There is a true sense here of no real bad guys but many shades of grey and an understanding for everyone’s actions. I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

So many scenes stand out in my mind and I will be going back and re reading Yield the Night very very soon. I adored this book, can you tell? Just go read the whole series.
