The novel comes up with the story of a Korean family that goes through many things over the years and its generations evolve because of this. Every generation in this novel tends to learn something from the previous one. Min Jin Lee had to do this the slow way because a quick paced novel might not have given the listeners the charm of the new and the old era. Sunja is the first one to get introduced in the novel in the early twentieth century and for there on the things just move on and on.

Allison Hiroto also never wanted to increase the speed in the novel that’s why the narrator never puts the step on the accelerator. Sunja’s family was not very rich but they had a lot of respect in the society which was the only asset the family had. Also, the family was proud of Sunja who was representing the future generation of the family. Everyone was expecting a lot from the girl but she brings nothing else but shame for the family.
The girl becomes pregnant after bonding with her rich boyfriend. The boy promised her that he would come for her but he never returns. Sunja’s family just kicks her out but she finds a savior who brings her to Japan and here she starts a new life.

In this new world, the family does not get a warm welcome but Sunja and the other family members stay strong and make a name for themselves in this new world. Free Food for Millionaires and The Best Girls are other challenging books by the same author, so do go through them the next weekend after finishing this book.
