Feeding the Dragon audiobook free

I enjoyed the heck out of this book. It brought me back to my book-loving childhood, even though the author’s experience of growing up in a library is pretty unique. It was interesting to discover that many of her remembrances of the ethnic variety in New York is similar to my own. She must be close in age to me also since many of the ways people encountered each other then have sadly hardened in recent years.

This was a fairly short audio book that covered a fairly short portion of her life. Took about 2 hours or so to listen to it. It was well-written and I wish it was longer because the author is an excellent reader – switching back and forth between old-time New York City accents and faithful to the emotions of the story. She really makes you believe a child is talking and thinking, like a good actor does, but without using a fake child’s voice. If she wrote another memoir, I would read that too.

I am the story. I am feeling the power of those words I was left with after watching the Theater production at Hartford Stage of Feeding The Dragon.
Listening with 60 yr old ears, and feeling with 6 yr old feelings. Watching almost with a cautiousness, like I was in Sharon’s private world…
Hearing my own mothers strong words of don’t tell….it’s our secret. Sharon’s courage to tell her story inspires me to take the time to tell mine.
She helped me to not be afraid to tell it, and to see as we grow older we can have different perspectives…
Telling the story from each of the important players shoes can and did bring more depth to the learnings and memories. What a way to honor the people who have touched my life, taking time to be in their realities, and their challenges.
Whose shoes do I want to step into as I look back and, (now a grandma, MiMi), look into the future. How, and who have influenced me. And how do I influence others that I care about.
Mom, Dad, Dean, Denise grandma and grandpa Rockwell, grandpa and grandma Kenney, my growing up friend and neighbor Deb Clossen. And her family…teacher ms lachance, miss Smithers. Brothers david, Daryl, and Danny.

Audiobook Feeding the Dragon by Cris Dukehart

This tells the story of Sharon Washington’s childhood and living above the St. Agnes Branch Library in New York City. Her imagination and her love of reading emerged from her sense of this place. The dragon was the coal furnace in the basement that her father kept stoked.

I was hesitant to give this a try because I typically don’t care for memoirs. However, I liked the sample, so I downloaded it, and I loved it. The writing is well-done, and the narration (or perhaps I should say the acting) blew me away. How wonderful to be able to do both so well on both. Extra applause to Sharon Washington.
