The fact that I had this book in my wish list for months makes it all the more disappointing. I was really looking forward to the sophomore release to the \”Hating Game\” by Sally Thorne but this book fell short of expectations. The characters had few redeeming qualities and it read very immature and contrived. I found myself looking for the next book and not hearing large passages without missing anything interesting.

First, don\’t go into this expecting a The Hating Game. I see many reviews making the comparison, but I think it is unfair to expect an author to stay in a box – there are just too many ideas out there and directions to explore to just recycle the same story. That being said, I have mixed feelings about this book. I LOVE Sally Thorne\’s voice. She has such a witty way with words which definitely helps makes this story flow – which it needed at times. I found some parts repetitive and the beginning was a little slow, but her unique voice kept me going. I also like – as in it\’s my cat nip – the whole brother\’s best friend trope so there was that, too. And Tom is a very likeable character. I have to admit, a couple of times Darcy was quick to excuse terrible behavior by those closest to her, and it did bug me. Also, I did not like the brother, Jamie, at all. I\’ve seen a few comments on social media asking for his book – that would be a big pass for me. As a whole, though, it was a good story. For the narration, at times I had a difficulty telling whether something was inner dialog, or actually said aloud by the character. I think this is in part to the fact that it seems there is so much inner monologue going on throughout.

Audiobook 99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne
I had a lot of great expectations for this book, even pre ordered it. I LOVED The Hating Game, and not just because of the story line but because I loved the clever, funny, cute way Sally Thorne wrote it. This book was dissapointing from the start. The writing was too corny, the plot was really odd and I COULD NOT STAND the main character. It was all \”too much\”. I almost quit listening a quarter of the way through. I hope Sally does better in her next novel…

Audio 99 Percent Mine narrated by Jayme Mattler
Sally Thorne\’s \’The Hating Game\’ was my secret pleasure when it first came out, so of course I eagerly awaited this book to arrive on Audible\’s virtual shelves. In short, it is dismal. The main character is so thoroughly unlikable, I simply couldn\’t finish the book. She is mean, petulant, petty, and whiny. I searched for any quality that would make me care about her plight, to try and understand the way she behaves – basically I gave her every benefit of the doubt. Ultimately it was a lost cause. The writing is shallow and predictable, moving at a snails pace as our protagonist undermines herself, her best interests, and the ones of those around her at every turn. Do yourself a favor, don\’t waste a credit on this one. Instead, if you haven\’t already, spend it on \’The Hating Game\’.

I was excited to listen to this book because I really enjoyed \”The Hating Game,\” but this one just didn\’t measure up for me. The author is very talented and I do enjoy her writing, but I found these characters to be unlikable and there just wasn\’t much of a story. The narration was kind of meh too, even though I have liked this narrator reading other books. I managed to finish this one (just barely) but when there turned out to be a bonus chapter at the end I just had to turn it off.
