Obviously: Stories from My Timeline

Every coming-of-age story that really works does so largely because it finds a way to both universalize personal experiences and personalize universal experiences. From familial issues, to breakups, to friendships, and everything in-between, Obviously: Stories from My Timeline certainly excels at those two things, so anyone of any age can read this and feel connected to it in various ways.

An aspect I loved, as someone of millennial age myself, is how this book does well to provide actual personality to being a millennial. So much of being a millennial goes undefined, but there’s really an identity to being old enough to remember something like Oregon Trail when it wasn’t a meme but a window into computers for a curious student. We weren’t born into the digital age, but we weren’t scared of it either; we grew up alongside it. Akilah Hughes grew up alongside it, so this entire book exudes that identity and illuminates how it has shaped her life in both positive and negative ways.

There’s so much value in knowing where you’re from. That includes your physical place of origin, sure, but it’s so much more; it’s identity. Being a millennial, being a YouTuber, being a black girl in a sea of whiteness; all of these are just parts of who Akilah Hughes is, and Obviously: Stories from My Timeline provides a remarkable understanding of where she came from, where she’s going, and why you should want to follow.

It could be generational, but I could not relate to the author at all. It was a mildly interesting story about her life, but she is just starting her life and writing about it now seemed like a moment of self indulgence. Not a book I will be recommending and I read a lot of books and not just fiction or fluff.

I got this book today and have been reading it quite voraciously.
Akilah is an amazingly talented writer who has a style that just flows. The hardest thing for a writer to have is a style that flows, that is all their own.
It cant be taught. Its the It factor of pen to paper.

Like Chers show, theres a variety to it. Good stories. Good meaning. You just get it.

Funny, fresh and real. I have to confess I had not heard about the author before, but thats because I am 44 and still using Facebook. Akilah is hilarious. I immediately shared it with a friend.

Akilah Hughes does a great job in sharing her positive growing up story. We all have a choice to give up or go forward when life throws us curves. Akilah relates how she was raised to meet the challenges of growing up with humor, ambition and perseverance. Her roll with the punches and keep moving forward childhood have served her well as she is establishing an impressive career. Great read for young women in general, and especially for fans of this up-and-comer!
