Atomic Love

The 1950s were a transitional era, in-between the end of WWII and the 1960s where the womens movement began its climb. Rosalind, was a woman straddling those years. In the late 1940s she had worked with the Manhattan Project as an physicist, the only female to help build the atomic bomb. Now, here she was working at Marshall Fields,a department store in Chicago, selling antique jewelry. How did this happen?

Rosalind always had an inquisitive mind, and followed her father when she could. She went to college and grad school, and she was hired to work with the Manhattan Project. As soon as the war ended, she lost her job. A lover, Weaver, who had left the company told someone she was emotionally unstable and who would want her working with them? She had a lovely apartment and was scraping by every month to pay the rent. The jewelry job did not pay much, but she had lost her sense of herself. She gave up finding another physicist job. An independent woman was now betwixt and between. Her sister, Louisa, was unhappy at home, and the search for self in womens hearts were gathering motion.

And, then, her ex-lover, Weaver, called, wanting to see her. Nothing doing, but then she received a call from an FBI agent. This man wanted her to start seeing Weaver again. They suspected Weaver had given secrets to the Russians, and they wanted him. As Rosalind, the lovely young woman, is playing games with Weaver whom she still loves, and the FBI agent whom she is just getting to know. She does not perceive the danger until an incident occurs. She is followed by unsavory characters, and is protected by the FBI. At the same time, Louisas marriage was unraveling. Discussing anything with her is difficult, Louisa is protecting herself, but finally she and Rosalind communicate. Rosalind had always had a good relationship with Louisa who had really brought her up. This new communication process brought them closer. Rosalind also had a good relationship with Louisa’s husband, and their discussion helped the flow of communication for all. Now Rosalind had the same with her niece, Louisas daughter. This was her entire family.

This is a finely wrought book, the characters all well defined, and the first three quarters of the book are so well written I read until I finished the book. The only critique I have is that the last quarter of the book seemed rushed, all issues needed to be addressed, but I needed it to be more drawn out. However, I enjoyed the book immensely. The thought of the womens movement is addressed, and we can see its head rearing. The era of the 1950s is well defined, the clothing, the city of Chicago, the food, the culture and environment. The romance and the sexual awakening of women is touched upon. The secrets of the bomb played out well. This is a book for everyone.

I read fiction knowing its not always realistic, but this bordered on ridiculous. I wasnt endeared to any character, except to maybe the protagonists sister. I thought it was amateur and not very thought provoking. Its difficult to pinpoint one particular thing I didnt like, because it was all of it. I skimmed more than half the book, and the only reason I did, was because I paid $14.00 and didnt want to throw my hard earned money away.

Decent book. Maybe the timing wasnt right for me or maybe because I had just finished a stellar book… I dont know.

This one didnt do it for me and was hard to fully engulf. The characters are decent… Rosalin a bit frustrating at times… The bodyguards too… ugh.

Still, its for a book club and tho Im not partaking, I swore to finish it. I am from Chicago so that part was refreshing and homey to me.

Not a fan of the ending. The author dragged out this relationship and then jumped forward to a year and done. Maybe for a sequel?

Very enjoyable and easy read about a female scientist, late of the Manhattan Project, now working selling jewelry in Chicago’s Fields Department Store, having been driven out of her chosen field by her former lover. The breakup and betrayal devastated her so when he returns to her life from out of the blue, she is torn between getting emotionally involved with him again and exacting revenge when the opportunity presents itself.

Atomic Love is a great read! It is romantic, exciting, and intriguing. The characters were well developed and the story moved right along. Jennie Fields certainly understands the human condition. I highly recommend Atomic Love.
