Well, it’s back to work for the private army of General Ferguson. But they have a new player in their midst. Captain Sara Gideon is going to join the group. She has returned from service in Afghanistan where her linguistic skills were put to good use, but the most amazing thing she did was fight off a group of Muslim Taliban during an ambush of a British Convoy. She fought like a true warrior and earned the highest award that the Brit’s can give. One problem, with her new role she might not be able to collect her medal.
She joins Holley, Dillon, Roper and Miller in their quest to rid England of Muslim terrorist. With the killing of Osama Bin Laden you would think that the game has changed for the better, but no, Ali Selim has taken center stage and the group needs to work hard to put an end to him and his plans of chaos that he wants to bring down on London.
Higgins does another good job of building on the characters, especially the new character of Sara Gideon. He further develops the angst between Jack Kelly and Dillon and Holley. All of this done as Ali Selim tries to bring about riot’s, chaos, bombings and the death of the Prime Minister as well as the President of the United States. And hopefully in the middle of all this the deaths of General Ferguson’s private army.
This is a good read and if you have enjoyed the tales of Holley and Dillon you will again enjoy this tale. The addition of Sara and another character, retired Captain Greg Slay, will bring new enjoyment as you get to know them and follow the team on their latest conquest.
I have enjoyed all of Higgins works and this one is no exception.
Enjoy!

A Devil Is Waiting audiobook in series Sean Dillon
In this 19th installment highlighting former IRA terrorist and hit-man Sean Dillon, Afghan war hero and linguist Captain Sara Gideon, also an heir to the Gideon Bank, is recruited by General Charles Ferguson for the Prime Minister’s private army (the elite British Security Service antiterrorist unit Group 4) that now employs Dillon and his remarkable talents.
As England prepares to welcome the President of the US, it is discovered that a fanatical mullah desires POTUS dead and there are followers who wish to make that happen. It is up to Ferguson and company to avert the plan by any means possible. Familiar characters are involved, including Daniel Holley, Giles Roper, and Harry and Billy Salter, though only the former is greatly involved in this tale. Higgins’ fans will see that Gideon shares some similarities to the departed, i.e., killed off, Hannah Bernstein, being a red-haired Jewish marksman who happens to be related to a cleric.
All in all, yes, it is formulaic, but aren’t a whole lot of popular fiction authors doing the same? For me, it is what the authors do with each tale and I, for one, still greatly enjoy the escapades of Dillon and Ferguson, and have since 1992 when “Eye of the Storm” was published and Higgins introduced us to them. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

Audiobook A Devil Is Waiting by Jack Higgins
I’ve been a Jack Higgins fan – particularly of his Sean Dillon books – for many years and have read most of his books. This one is OK, but not up to Higgins’ usual standard. There is less action, and the book moves along very slowly. In addition, I was disappointed to find that Sean Dillon was given a minor role in this book. In earlier books, he’s clearly been the hero, and Higgins has developed his character exceptionally well across the earlier books. Here Dillon has, at best, a supporting role. Moreover, the new central character/hero is not very dynamic or interesting. I hope the author will go back to putting Dillon in the starring role and return to writing lots of action scenes in future books.

Audio A Devil Is Waiting narrated by Michael Page
Jack Higgins is, of course, on of the greatest writers in the genre.
Sean Dillon is one of the greatest characters in the genre.
The story is fast paced and fun.
A new character hitches along for the ride (She has potential to be a great new addition.)
As always, a great yarn.
I cannot foresee any drop in quality of writing from Mr. Higgins.
The only reason that I gave this 4 stars is that I read it right after I finished Tom Clancy’s “Command Authority”.
“Command Authority” is much more complex.
If I had read “A Devil is Waiting” first, it probably would have gotten the 5 Stars it deserves.

This series continues to be remarkable. The entrance of Sara is great but she is permanently crippled it seems and has little regard for her own safety. She is definitely written as a militarily competent yet somewhat compromised woman much intent on securing a love interest.
