Josephine Reynolds is one of the first female firefighters and the first in Britain. Somehow she was able to navigate the male dominated culture of the fire service with grace and humor. It was especially enlightening to get to know her as a person in these pages. Jo shares her struggles her invites us into the world of firefighters for a rare look at firefighting, the British way.

A wonderful memoir, full of spirit and heart. It brings to life the struggles and triumphs of Britain’s first female firefighter who tells her amazing story. I was so engrossed, I missed several buses while waiting at the bus stop!

Really enjoyed this book.
This was my era, & it really evokes the feeling of early – mid ’80s without over dramatizing the issues that faced everyone .
I was fascinated by the story & the trials & tribulations faced by an “ordinary teenager” to achieve something extraordinary.
It isn’t always easy reading, some of the anecdotes are, by the very nature of the tale, quite upsetting, but whilst they are not underplayed, it is not unnecessarily graphic (indeed, sometimes more powerful in the understatement).
The author pulls no punches, & is not afraid to show herself in an not all together flattering light in some places, which makes her all the more likeable to me.
This books goes up to when the author is 22, I can’t wait to ready the next instalment of this not so ordinary life!

Perfect gift for a female friend who has just become a fully fledged firefighter.
I got to read the first two chapters online and Im now wanting to know how she got on. My friend was delighted with it and fortunately hadnt read it yet.
Such an inspirational gift.
