The first book was amazing, but I feel like author lost her voice in this book. Instead of Evie narrating, it’s Aveda. However, it reads exactly like the last book. It reads like Evie was narrating. It’s clear that Aveda is supposed to be having an existential crisis the whole book, but the result isn’t a book that reads like Aveda having an existential crisis. It reads like a book where Evie has renamed herself Aveda and is having an existential crisis. It was just never really convincing that this was Aveda. There was nothing that set her apart from first book Evie. It was also much more “slice of life” style than super-heroine style. It really felt like the powers and action and fun of the first book took a backseat to a character that forgot who she was, and not in the good way. Aveda, even in existential crisis, needs a voice that is uniquely hers, not one that’s exactly as book 1 Evie.

In the first book of this series, Heroine Complex, Evie Tanaka, personal assistant to Superheroine Aveda Jupiter (aka Annie Chang), is forced to come out of her best friend’s shadow and embrace her own powers. The story is told from Evie’s pov. In this follow-up pov switches to AJ as she struggles to be New San Francisco ‘s top hero once again. For a big chunk of the book she is such a jerk (in first person, remember) that I was tempted to quit reading. Then I got a glimmer that whatever the supernatural menace was, this was really about AJ’s redemption and the reconciliation of her AJ and Annie sides. And that turned out to be worth sticking with the book.

Audiobook Heroine Worship (Heroine Complex #2) by Sarah Kuhn
EROINE WORSHIP is the sequel to HEROINE COMPLEX which is about Aveda Jupiter and her best friend Evie Tanaka. This is a very entertaining book about Aveda trying to adjust to the sudden drop in crime rate, her best friend getting married, and her own lack of an identity without heroism.
It’s a great and silly book with Bridezilla villains, crazy demon possessing dresses, and other weirdness. Oddly the thing that worked best for the story is Aveda trying to deal with a past crush of hers that dated a friend as well as the awkwardness involved. If you read the first book, you’ll probably enjoy it. If not, well, it probably won’t make much sense.
Good characters, good funny scenes.
8/10

Audio Heroine Worship (Heroine Complex #2) narrated by Emily Woo Zeller
A decent follow up to the first book, told from the perspective of the heroine. Not as satisfying as the first book, but a fun read.

Totally lives up to the standards of the first book. I was a little put off when I saw that this story is told from Annie/Aveda Jupiter’s perspective, since I liked Evie so well as a protagonist in the first book, but the author knows Annie just as well, and does just as good a job of peeling her open for the reader to see all sides of her inner struggle. Absolutely recommended.
