World War II was more horrifying than the first one because more devastating and deadly weapons were used in the war this time. Also, the different nations of the world were killing more and more of the enemy civilians without any reason. Yossarian was one of the bombardiers and this makes him a big enemy of the civilians. He and his other teammates used to hit civilians and enemy camps with the help of their planes.

All they had to do was to follow orders without providing any kind of reasoning against the orders. The soldiers were not allowed to use their brains and also refusing to something was considered a sin. Whoever among the soldiers said no to the orders was considered sane and such a soldier was not allowed to leave the camp after that. So the soldiers were not fulfilling their duty rather they were fighting a battle for their own life.
Saying “No” means leaving the job and getting caught by the army you once served. Joseph Heller has done quite a homework for this book because the author has collected a lot of information regarding the World War era. Joseph perhaps wanted to tell the people who have faced severe bombardment during the war that it was not the fault of the soldiers rather they were asked to launch such attacks by their superiors.

Jay O. Sanders has given Yossarian the voice of a man who is in serious conflict with his mind and heart. This book is better than Closing Time because it has more energy and is linked to the part of history which people wanted to know more about.
