The plot for this fast paced thriller takes the reader from an attempted assassination of the pope by Al-Qaeda terrorists to Washington, London, Paris, and Jerusalem, the last being the home of Israeli agent Gabriel Allon. Recognizing the global threat of such terrorism, the American president enlists the help of Israel to achieve a just revenge.
Allon, knowing with almost total certainty who the wealthy power brokers are, devises an intricate plan to lure the the wealthy masterminds from hiding. The plan involves marketing a Van Gogh painting that was thought to have been destroyed and coupling this painting with an attractive American expert named Sarah Bancroft. Sarah has an ulterior motive: revenge against the architects of 9/11 who are responsible for the death of her sweetheart.
I’ve read a number of books by Daniel Silva and this is his best so far. His characters are interesting and well-defined and the plot moves along quickly and smoothly. He is also adept at describing the details of various geographic locations throughout the world, something the well-traveled reader will greatly appreciate. Silva was raised Catholic but converted to Judaism when he married so he is well qualified to write about activities at the Vatican as well as Allon’s headquarters on Tel Aviv’s King Saul Boulevard.
It was an enjoyable and satisfying read. I have several more books by Silva on my “to read” list.

The Messenger audiobook in series Gabriel Allon
Having read most of the authors books which were very good I looked forward to The Messenger but found it disappointing. As usual Silva spends a lot of time setting up the story, then the “crew” from the office enters and does most of the work while Gabriel directs from the sidelines and lastly rushes to the rescue at the end of the story which by the way is a very predictable and and lacks any suspense at all.
In this particular novel the action begins when there is a horrible attack on the Vatican and Gabriel is called in to seek out those responsible in this case a notorious terrorist and the man who is funding him by the name of “Zizi” who is the head of a global conglomerate and collector of art which is his passion. Gabriel decides to infiltrate the organization by inserting a woman named Sara who is a renown curator of an art museum. The plot is complex but boring and predicable.
On the political side this book very interesting in exposing the role of the House of Saud in the real world. On
one hand Saudi Arabia floods America with petrodollars and oil while on the other hand they are the largest funder of world terrorism in the Middle East. As a patriot this reality of the real world is despicable to me and as the saying goes “politics create strange bed fellows”. I am sure followers of Silva’s books while totally be fascinated with this outing but I found it to be a real disappointment. I did recently read the authors most recent book entitled “The Order” to be excellent so I have not given up on Daniel Silva. How about a future book featuring Chiara, Gabriel’s wife who i find a fascinating character in her own right.

Audiobook The Messenger by Daniel Silva
Remember that scene in the movie Munich in which the French gangster reveals he knows Eric Bana’s character is Israeli by saying “the world has been hard on your tribe”? Well, that was a fairly idealized view of an interaction like that. Sadly, most people do not realize that the world is, and continues to be, very hard on Jews.
But, if you saw that scene and thought “if this guy that Eric Bana plays were a super spy and continued to be a quiet, caring, sentimental, reluctant cold hard killer of those who would attack the Jewish tribe” then you will love the Gabriel Alon books.
Even if you didn’t, but you don’t like seeing evil people win, you will still enjoy these books and the ways Gabriel rises above politics, infighting, his own demons, racism, and tricky mortal situations, you will still love Gabriel Alon books.

Audio The Messenger narrated by George Guidall
I am glued to this series as I am enticed by the writers ability to continually draw me into Gabriel’s struggles. I can associate with them an as such the author is able to provide me some form of psycho-therapy that I more beneficial then that which I am assigned at the VA hospital. Allon’s loyalty to his country an the people around him are ideas that are being lost and the series pulls in the reader to show how powerful it can be. Silva’s ability to seamlessly move from one book to another makes the series one of the best I have read. Leaking forward to Book 7.

I’ve now read and reviewed all the Gabriel Allon thrillers so this review marks, for me, the end of a saga.
In many ways `The Messenger’ ranks as one of the best and most gripping of the entire 14 volume series – although after finishing the book I firmly believe Saudi Arabia should be at the very bottom of Daniel Silva’s holiday destination list.
Two attempts on the life of the Pope, a rediscovered van Gogh painting worth many millions of dollars and the funding of international jihadism are just a few of the elements that make it extremely difficult to put down the book. Ari Shamron together with some familiar members of Israeli intelligence also play a critical role whilst the American CIA are never far away.
And, in the last few pages, Ari Shamron finally persuades Gabriel Allon and Chiara Zolli to sort out one or two issues completely unconnected with international terrorism, missing of Old Masters and rediscovered Impressionist paintings.
