A Flag of Truce audiobook free

Donachie writes nautical fiction with the best of them. Fast paced. Good characters. He repeats a lot about the background of the characters but you have to when it is a series and you need to set (and reset) the stage to put your characters “in character” for those who have not started the series at the beginning. My only complaint is the core story. Everything revolves around Pearce’s illegal impressment and that part of the story never goes away. None the less, I am reading right through the series because the books are so well written in the best nautical fiction tradition. Who doesn’t like hearing about how Midshipmen are always starving and in awe when an Admiral actually looks in their direction? And it is hard to beat a good flogging and ship to ship action every now and then. I ran across this series totally by accident and really am glad that I did.

A Flag of Truce audiobook in series John Pearce

For anyone who likes to read historical sea novels this is a pleasant surprise by and author I had not come across previously. While mainly a story of the sea it is also interesting to read about the intricacies of the conflict of the conflict between Britain and France at the time of the revolution. It is a good story with plenty of sea action and subterfuge and collaboration between senior British officers when circling to protect their own. A good read and I will read more of this authors books

Audiobook A Flag of Truce by David Donachie

Technical details a bit off, for example cannon smoke described repeatedly as black, but black powder, utilized exclusively during the time period of these novels, gives a very white smoke. And the carriages of various cannon are described as trunnions. The trunnion is a very specific part of the cannon tube, lateral projections of the metal of the gun tube used to secure the gun tube to the actual carriage. Carriage should be substituted for trunnion in these cases. Most of other technical naval detail is accurate. generaly a good read.

Audio A Flag of Truce narrated by Peter Wickham

I normally like books like this, but I just could not get into this one. After the first couple of chapters I can usually tell if I like a book and it is going to keep my interest, this one did not. Very slow starting.

The only problem I have with Donachie, as with any writer creating series like this, is his need to update new readers with background at every turn.

Readers are advised to start at book one and work their way forward to enjoy the adventures of Pearce and his merry men,and lady.
