I made the mistake of reading several of the books in a row in sequence and began to find myself tiring of the personal issues of the 2 main characters . At 1st I was intrigued but for 2 people so good at their jobs, the constant personal psychoanalysis gets old. There are authors whose main characters are written strongly and in such a way as to not know if the author is male or female. Kinkaid’s character without a doubt, is written by a female :-). It is interesting to hear my husband say “Men don’t think like that.” I also think the story and the on going almost bland love interest appeals to women more than men judging by my husband’s response. He liked the plots of the.mysteries, just not the personal complications. So there you have it 🙂

In a Dark House audiobook in series Duncan Kincaid / Gemma James Mystery Novels
Having read all the books in this series up to this one, I feel comfortable saying this is, by far, my favorite. I couldn’t put the book down. The interweaving themes and unsolved crimes were tantalizingly woven together with enough red herrings to not know how it might turn out – not the least of which is the struggle between Kincaid and his son’s grandparents for custody. A cliffhanger all the way. I am truly appreciating Deborah Crombie’s skill as a writer. Her characters are beautifully delineated, and I end of caring deeply about their lives. Even the truly deranged are believable and three dimensional. Bravo!
Much as I like the characters, plot and ambiance of environments, I am increasingly irritated at Duncan and Gemma’s carelessness with their own children.Although they are good at feeling guilty about broken promises, they nonetheless leap into the job the instant it beacons.

Audiobook In a Dark House by Deborah Crombie
Like every other book in the series, this one is engrossing in the characterization, depiction of the characters’ lives and relationships and in the mystery presented. Deborah Crombie belongs in that top tier of mystery writers who began with a great talent and whose writing gets better somehow with each book.
Another great book in Gemma James, Duncan Kincaid series. Interesting characters, story. Continuing story of Gemma James, Duncan Kincaid, Doug Cullen. These characters and their lives continue to change which makes the series interesting. Crombie’s writing style is great and attention to detail makes the stories worth reading.

Audio In a Dark House narrated by Michael Deehy
The 4 stars are for the novel, which is another good read from Deborah Crombie. However, if I were rating Amazon it would be no stars at all.
The problems with formatting and (lack of) proof reading have been evident since I read my first kindle book, but the quality of this particular e-book really took the cake. Is it really so difficult to insert line breaks between scenes within the prose? Dialogue and action description just flowed from one event onto the next, with no indication the scene had moved to another character/plot development. This resulted in a very poor reading experience, as it became confusing at some points that the author had moved on.
I feel very annoyed at what smacks of Amazon’s contempt for their readers who have paid a not insignificant sum for a product which cannot cost much, if anything, to reproduce. I strongly suggest that Amazon invests some time and, dare I say, money, into improving the formatting and quality of the kindle books in order to improve the reading experience. I feel so annoyed about this that I am tempted to just return to hard copy books, which I would certainly not be purchasing from Amazon.

I began reading the Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James books in the middle of the series – Water Like a Stone – and was hooked but, to be honest, I wouldn’t have read all Deborah Crombie’s 18 in the series had I started at the first which Is good but not as rounded as the later novels and I held off commenting on any until completed the marathon. Firstly, I can say, without fear or favour, that I thoroughly enjoyed all of the mysteries. They are all whodunnits but centred around an expanding group of families and friends. While each book covers a separate mystery and murder(s) there is the recurrent theme of the family that runs through all the stories – and often murders come to Duncan and Gemma – separately and together. Because of the titles there is no need for a spoiler alert to the readers of the first book to know that Duncan and Gemma become an item and then a family – not as quickly as one might think. Having read a number of books that have been turned into TV series I’m surprised that no-one has attempted to turn what I believe to be one of the finest of the genre – I have not come across another series that so economically but finely draws its main characters. However, I notice that many of the current TV series have relatively few central characters and that perhaps the increasing cast of friends and family (despite losing a few on the way) might put producers off.
