I’ve enjoyed all of the books in this series, but this one stands out. Crombie weaves together a number of plot threads, and the tension rarely lets up. We are introduced to new characters, Kinkaid’s parents and sister, who are fleshed out despite their being new to the series. Readers are also introduced to the canal boat culture. And because the family is visiting family for Christmas, we get to see Kincaid and Gemma walk the fine line between supporting local police and intruding on their “patch” when crimes are committed. Suspense builds to the end. A very enjoyable read!

This is an interesting story in an unusual setting with a story of its own, The characters are a disappointment in that there appears a lot of potential, but they are not developed substantially. It is essentially a plot driven novel which is fine, just does not do the story justice from my point of view. There is so much richness in the novel that is left on the cutting room floor. The environmental learning is a good story in itself, quite different from usual settings and fascinating. A good job was done with the setting I will read another of this author’s work in hopes that the characters become more three diminutional and real. The murder needs to be solved, of course, but all of the character flaws and family dynamics do not need fixing at the end. It trivializes the characters and leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Otherwise, I can recommend this book as a good read, more lightweight than it has the potential for being, but fun.

Water Like a Stone audiobook in series Duncan Kincaid / Gemma James Mystery Novels

I believe I have every one of Deborah Crombie’s series with Gemma and Duncan. Having visited England a number of times, I enjoy being able to visualize the scenes with some accuracy, seeing the color differences between the Lake District, Wales, areas in London, and the coasts, and hearing the various dialects which I heard in my travels. The characters have grown, personally and in relationship, and the inclusion of their parenting has added a new breadth to the plots. I especially enjoy Crombie’s examples showing the difference between the classes, the various comments one station has concerning another, and the balance she has her characters keep when dealing with those not of their class. I wouldn’t miss a new novel and am anxious for the next almost before I have finished the last.

Audiobook Water Like a Stone by Deborah Crombie

This novel is more of a multi-family drama than a murder mystery. There are murders and deaths, to be sure, but the reader is certain to be more drawn in to the Kincaid, Wain and other complicated family dynamics playing out in a Cheshire countryside with warm and cozy towns, the Kincaid family farm, and the fascinating “character” of the local canals and the water people who call them home in winter.

I also think I have not read in a long time a more convincing suspense plot that includes such a convincing portrait of antisocial (psychopathological) personality disorder and the evil it can perpetrate. The story was eerily realistic. I recommend this novel even to a first time reader of this series. Just don’t expect a traditional whodunit.

Audio Water Like a Stone narrated by Michael Deehy

Deborah Crombie is one of my favorite authors. The novel is very good as far as I have read. I wanted to read an actual book instead of reading on my kindle, that I really do enjoy. But the print is small and very, very light. It’s way too difficult to read at night even with a good light. Yes, I am older but this purchase was a waste. Of course, the paperback is $2.99 today instead of $7.99. Not a good read because of publisher not because of the author.

This is one of the best yet!! Took me right to google narrow boats and the canal system of England.. Love a book that treats you to something absolutely new!! These series are like comfortable old shoes.. I relish even the idea of starting one as I know I am going to feel at home with Duncan and Gemma..in this book finally met the family!! so so good..thank you Deborah!!

I usually try to read series in the order written, but here I was with Book 11 of the Kincaid/James series, the first I’ve ever read of Deborah Crombie.

This American author has a gift of writing British dialogue and describing the lifestyle and landscape extremely well. Her ability at fleshing out her characters was exceptional. This novel is as much about relationships as it is about the crimes.

The number of crimes and their interconnectedness strains credulity a bit, but the clever plotting brings it all together with finesse.

Water Like A Stone can definitely be read as a stand alone. I think I’ll go back to the start of this long series soon as I found this one well written pleasurable reading.
