I have been enjoying this series of books about Commissario Guido Brunetti, a policer officer and detective who lives and works in Venice. I particularly enjoyed this book for its several facets: the mystery surrounding the remains of the kidnapped son of a Venetian Count; Brunetti’s musings on his own father-in-law’s assertion that Paola (Brunetti’s wife) is unhappy in her marriage; the process by which Brunetti puzzles out the answers to the murder; and as always, Brunetti’s philosophical thoughts about life, love, truth, and justice. I love how modern-day Venice figures prominently in each of these books and never tire of reading about the city’s architecture and how life goes on there without cars or scooters or even elevators. Through dialogue and the craft with which Donna Leon writes about the main characters in the series, the reader continues to gain insight about their personalities, working and/or familial relationships, their strengths and weaknesses, and their Venetian way of life. I recommend the series and especially this book.

A Noble Radiance audiobook in series Commissario Brunetti Mysteries

Thank you Donna Leon for writing this brilliant series. Commisario Brunetti, his colleagues and family have become almost like friends after all these years. And Venice also is a main character in these books.

A badly decomposed body of a young man has been found in a shallow grave by a farmer ploughing up a field. Brunetti thinks it may be connected to a kidnapping a couple of years earlier of the son and heir of Count Lorenzoni, a member of the Venetian aristocracy. As usual Patta Brunetti’s superior is more concerned with how things look than seeking justice. Fortunately Brunetti, aided by Patta’s secretary Elektra and fellow policemen pursues all the clues through the Italian underground to a conclusion that may not satisfy everyone. Great book!

Audiobook A Noble Radiance by Donna Leonm

This book, like all of Ms. Leon’s that I’ve read, is terrific. She is able to elevate the mystery to new heights that (much like Louise Penny) questions and explores the morality issues related to a crime. Guido is Everyman with standards of what is right but still retains a bit of flexibility and the ability get along in the corrupt atmosphere of Venice. He also is able to overcome a stupid boss and love his family despite the grimness of his job. This novel explores the excesses of the rich and privileged and contrasts them with Guido’s code of ethics. It is not only entertaining, but a sounding board for issues that seem to transcend the laws of a city and country. I recommend this book to everyone who is a looking for more than a mere mystery and wants some mental stimulation. Good job, again, Ms. Leon!

Audio A Noble Radiance narrated by David Colacci

I started this series in the middle and I think I am up to date with all of her books. She has a very different way of writing a mystery. They are not just ‘who dunnits’. You get into the life of Venice and the way of life of the actual people. The inspector is a someone I would like as a friend and his wife is wonderful. Strong charactered and bright but loves the tacky newspapers of Itaily for all their silly stories. The stories are written from day to day and do not rush to the end of the mystery that quickly, you wander around all over Venice and its life. This to me makes it more of a story. My only problem with her books is that you get to see more of the bad , or seedier side of Venice than the wonderful side. While I know that’s all true Venice is fantastic and a few more acknowledements would be great!
Her writing skills are good so you don’t find yourself cringing at bad vocabulary and can focus on disappearing into the life of Venice. All I can say is go to Venice and you’ll follow him around the city even more.

I have read nearly every one of Donna Leon’s books, so I obviously like her. I read them first as an intro for a trip to Venice, and I DID find it easier to navigate, because she uses real locations. Her hero often does not bring his villains to justice, and it bothers him a lot, but his family is so dear and such a comfort and you will grow to love them as much as your own family, that it helps him through his days. This plot involves unwinding the causes and complicated cover-up of a two year disappearance of a noble family’s only son. I thought Leon did her usual good job on developing her characters and making the plot plausible.
