Old fans of the series can guess the pattern up till now. This is the fifth part of the series and after every two parts written in the main line of action, there is one that shows the Nowhere Man helping other people on the street.
His daily routine of hiding and keeping a low profile in front of his enemies get disturbed now and then when someone comes to him or calls him for help. Gregg Hurwitz has still not introduced any character with whom this assassin could establish any emotional contact.
INTO THE FIRE
Every story introduces a new person in distress and after the completion of the mission, the story and the character just become history.
Once it was an intern in The Intern: An Orphan X Short Story and then Evan was asked by Jack to save a new Orphan in Hellbent. Here it is a boy named Max who has a special key in his possession. Max does not know what the use of that key is but he is dead sure that someone is coming after him and the key and he is not friendly. Evan can help him because the rest of the people have denied or they just got a bullet in the head.
Evan thought that the local gangs were not a big worry for him and the key would be to unlock a treasure box. But the Nowhere Man was wrong; with Max and the key with him, he attracted a lot of trouble for himself. In a quick-paced narration by Scott Brick, the story moves from one scene to another like a bolt. There was so much in this story that slowing down was not an option.
