This is a good demonstration of gamelit conventions applied competently, the minimal characterization is believable and fun, and I feel like the characters are, if not original then likable at least. Dont come looking for new ideas but if you want some good dungeon fun this is a fine example.

Bone Dungeon audiobook Series Shifters Unbound

Although certain aspects of the story aren’t that new Jonathan does do a good job of taking them in a new direction and doing things with them I haven’t encountered before, which is the point, isn’t it? Ryan may be the technical MC of the story, but it is Blake who is the true focus of the story. And yes, Blake is given an overpowered ability, but unlike other settings that struggle with making a ‘broken’ character without breaking the setting Blake’s ability isn’t unique to him, just extremely rare. Furthermore, there are some limitations on his ability that help to keep him from being too setting breaking without having to break the entire setting so that he has something to struggle against to create a story. It is a great story and I’m diving into the next part as soon as possible.

And, for anyone who is considering the audio book version instead? I can’t exactly recommend it. The story is the same, and soundbooth theater has a great cast of narrators working on it, but they added sound effects in, and most of the time they aren’t quite right (and occasionally notably wrong) for what is being described in the scene. The few times the sound effects are right their timing is usually off just enough to break the sense of immersion in the setting. Even worst still, the times they are most severely off are the times you want something that breaks the sense of immersion the least. If you have the time to read instead of listen I most definitely recommend the ebook over the audiobook.

Audiobook Bone Dungeon by Cris Dukehart

As my first foray into Dungeon Core LitRPG (quite a mouthful, ey?), I thought this was a great book to start with. I enjoy the dual focus on both the dungeon itself and a group of adventurers, since it created a compelling narrative.

I personally enjoyed the world the most and found the levelling system and various class upgrades to be immensely fascinating and inventive.

I have already bought the sequel, and look forward to seeing where the story goes from here!

Please don’t mind the rating too much. A lot of people will assume anything but a 100% score is bad, but for me, I think a 4/5 is a great score. I would perhaps have given it a 5/5 if the writing had been stronger and flowed better, but as a debut novel, I thought it was great and the lack of flow was more-than-made-up-for by the inventive world surrounding the narrative. I think the repetition of certain established facts and lack of word variety at times was what made it a 4/5 for me, though, for what it’s worth, if it’d been a 1/100 scale, I would’ve given it an 85 in score.

Audio Bone Dungeon narrated by Cris Dukehart

This book is delightful. I fell in love with Ryan. A dungeon with a good heart, a commitment to doing the right thing, and knack for … um… interesting mob /boss names. His wisp is slightly air-headed, forgetful, and subject to flattery.
But…!!! Before you read the next one, read the write up and reviews. I hopped straight into it because this one was fun. Don’t do it! The next book is fun … for about 1/2 -1/3 of the way through. Then it gets… dark. Like depressed dungeon wisps, overpowered villians, grieving main characters, dark. So… proceed with caution. This book is fun… but the way ahead is trapped!
Note: I gave this book 4 stars after finishing it. I just finished giving book 2 a 1 star review. Don’t get me wrong, the author continues to do a masterful, brilliant job. I just REALLY don’t like where the series seems to be headed… and felt obligated to offer warning.

I picked this book up after reading the preview on RoyalRoad, and was hooked. Unfortunately I was hooked so hard that i wound up binge-reading it in one go because I couldn’t put it down.

There were many instances of this book giving me a load of chuckles, particularly the oft mentioned fight club. I also really liked the fact that it uses a dungeon type often warned against in every other Dungeon Core book I have read so far, so it was a novel experience.

The main villain definitely had some teeth, and there were a few moments I was genuinely worried about the MCs. Though the villains are a bit cartoonish with how absurdly evil they are. Despite that though, the next book is set up nicely, and I can’t wait to see what happens.

Overall I recommend it as a light amusing read to fill an afternoon, but I would warn against expecting anything more than that.
