Something Special

Yeah, no billionaires! Not everyone survives high school intact. Some of us are too sensitive and some of us are Prime targets for bullies. Some want to enjoy our embarrassment and others feel bad but are glad it’s not them. Charlie and Jared have been friends since they sat in her tree house eating peanut butter and going on adventures. Things are changing and Jared is popular while she is the silent one on the sidelines. They are having one last adventure before school starts. They hike to a private beach, but Jared’s friends are there, one a boy who makes her very uncomfortable. She watches Jared make out with another girl and tries to run home. A ruckus occurs that changes her life. Deserted and feeling like she lost her voice, Charlie closes down.

The writing is superb. It is literate enough to talk about exploring the themes of why some girls and women are more likely to become victims of physical or verbal abuse without being a downer. The writing puts us in Charlie’s mind, because she is unable to verbalize her anxiety at not be perfect enough for her parent or Avery. As someone who was bullied, I did not feel any of the triggers a book like this would normally give me.
The anxiety I felt I couldn’t communicate as well and it’s a never ending cycle of being bullied, closing in to protect yourself, acting anxious and weird and being bullied more.

It doesn’t sacrifice the dialogue or the repetition of abuse even when she is able to form her own backbone. One of the best examples of the Show, Don’t Tell rule of writing is when her friend is in a lesbian relationship and finds out not only that she was being cheated on with their room mate, but that they had been living with her ex and no one had told her. She didn’t give advice, she just shared her story about being the speed bump in someone else’s HEA. This book is something special.

This book will be one that will be on my mind for a long time. Its not a typical romance in that it does not follow traditional tropes. The main character,Charlie, relates the story in first person. Growing up and finding ourselves is painful in many ways. Charlie suffered through so much adversity. The book is so beautifully written and captures each character where they are unique. I enjoyed the progression of Charlies life and how she grew as a person who finally found her passion, her acceptance of herself, the ability to love and accept her family and finally accept the love from her soul mate. I highly recommend this book, it was hard to put down. I look forward to more outstanding books by this author.

Whenever I finish a S. Massery book I have the desire to spin in a field of flowers.

Something special is no exception to that feeling.

I will admit, Avery spends the book making me feel homicidal, and I want to slap Charlie a little.

Something special touches on some subtle but sensitive subjects, that I think are very important.

Massery is a master, simple as that. I sincerely hope you pick up this book, and continue to read every single one she writes in the future!

This was a enchanting love story with lots of drama and steamy sex scenes . I cried along with them and was glad that they were going to get their happy ever after beginning.

I received this book on a Friday and ended up spending my whole weekend reading it! I loved how this story was told in multiple time periods so you could better understand why the characters are how they are. It was very descriptive and at times I felt like I was actually in those situations with Charlotte as well.
