I was drawn to read this book after watching The Evil Dead with Bruce Campbell’s commentary. His wit and humor during the commentary made me curious about his writing, and I must say, the book didn’t disappoint. It’s just as funny and genuine as Bruce himself.

In his memoir/biography covering his life up to 2002, Campbell shares memories of his upbringing, the serendipitous meeting with Sam Raimi, and their ventures into making Super-8 movies together. Of course, the focus is on the iconic Evil Dead franchise and the experiences he had while making it. If you’re particularly interested in the franchise, you might want to explore the DVD extra features and documentaries, with “Medieval Times – The Making of Army of Darkness” being a standout recommendation (it’s even available for free on YouTube).

However, what truly struck me about this book was the candid portrayal of an actor’s life behind the scenes. Campbell’s determination and dedication to his craft are evident, and I was appalled to learn that he had to resort to making cold calls to beg for investment money. This book offers a glimpse into the life of an actor who doesn’t live in mansions and receive endorsements, the side of Hollywood that is often hidden from public view.

It’s worth noting that while Campbell has written more, I’m unsure if I’ll pick up his other works. He seems to have covered the most significant parts of his life in this book, including his experiences with Evil Dead, Brisco County Jr., and Hercules. I wonder if there’s much more to tell beyond this point. Nonetheless, I’m open to exploring his other writings if they offer new perspectives and insights.

Overall, “If Chins Could Kill” is a compelling read for anyone interested in the life of an actor who has worked tirelessly in the industry, overcoming challenges, and providing a genuine look behind the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.

If Chins Could Kill audiobook

The decision to pick up this book was influenced by the excellent reviews it received, my curiosity about the entertainment industry, and my appreciation for Bruce Campbell. Although I wasn’t a huge Campbell fan and never cared much for the Evil Dead films, I did enjoy his performances in other works like Hercules and Xena. However, after reading “If Chins Could Kill” in just two days, my perspective on Campbell completely shifted. I became enamored with him and ended up renting every Evil Dead film and B movie he’s been a part of.

This biography of Campbell’s life is more of a tongue-in-cheek account rather than a typical “tell-all” about Hollywood. While he does mention a few tidbits about well-known actors in the industry, don’t expect a gossip-filled exposé. Additionally, the book isn’t a step-by-step guide for aspiring actors, though Campbell does share some valuable pointers and suggestions from his own experiences.

Nevertheless, “If Chins Could Kill” has broad appeal, especially for those trying to break into showbiz or anyone with an interest in Hollywood. Campbell’s engaging anecdotes kept me entertained for hours, and my fascination with the industry grew with each turn of the page. It reminded me of a better-written version of William Goldman’s “Adventures in the Screen Trade.” This book will appeal not only to die-hard Campbell fans but also to budding actors and anyone who enjoys glimpses into the world of E! Television.

One of the most surprising aspects of the book was Campbell’s exceptional writing skills. I found myself admiring his journalistic abilities even more than his acting prowess. The chapters flow well together, though the book starts a bit slowly in his childhood recollections, picking up momentum as he delves into his film adventures, especially with the making of “The Evil Dead.” Campbell’s honest portrayal of the struggles faced by “B” actors gave me a new appreciation for their profession, dispelling the misconception of an actor’s glamorous and lucrative lifestyle.

While the book is thoroughly enjoyable, there are a few minor issues. Campbell occasionally jumps from one story to another within a chapter, and some anecdotes feel slightly out of place. However, this informal style gives the impression that Campbell is sharing the stories in a personal, one-on-one conversation. The book is richly illustrated with photographs, but some higher quality images, especially of Bruce himself, would have been appreciated. The contrast between the beautiful book jacket and the grainy images inside is a little disappointing, considering the otherwise well-crafted appearance of the book.

In conclusion, “If Chins Could Kill” stands out as one of the most entertaining biographies I’ve ever read, providing an honest and captivating look into Hollywood. Even if you’re unfamiliar with Bruce Campbell or have no particular interest in acting, I highly recommend picking up this book for an engaging, inside perspective on the life of a successful B movie actor.

Audio If Chins Could Kill narrated by Bruce Campbell

I have been a longtime admirer of Bruce Campbell, especially due to my passion for the Evil Dead franchise. However, beyond that, I have enjoyed his performances in various other projects as well. I remember feeling disheartened when The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. got canceled, and I’ve found joy in watching him host Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Bruce Campbell’s charisma has always resonated with me.

Now, he offers us an opportunity to know him better through this book, and I must say, I also recently purchased “Hail to the Chin: Further Confessions of a B Movie Actor” to delve even deeper into his life. What stands out to me is the honesty, wit, and charm that he brings to his writing. It was pleasantly surprising to discover that he is an excellent writer too – who would have thought?

Through his words, Bruce provides valuable insights into the world of acting and the intricacies of the entertainment industry. I genuinely appreciate his acknowledgement of the unsung heroes behind the scenes who play an essential role in creating and delivering the entertainment we all love. It’s a rare trait to give credit where it’s due, and Bruce does it effortlessly.

For all Bruce Campbell fans out there, this book is an absolute must-read. I can confidently guarantee that it will deepen your admiration for him even further. His writing skillfully pulls you in, offering a unique perspective on the acting world and providing a delightful journey through his life and experiences.
