I am reading through Daniel Silva’s Gabriel Allon series for the third time. Normally I would get books from the library, but my library is closed because of the pandemic. I am purchasing Silva’s books in paperback now. They are the only books I will spend money on. This novel and all of his early novels are what kept me waiting for July when a new Daniel Silva book would come out. His writing in these earlier novels is exquisite. The storytelling, characters, detailed scenic descriptions, and periodic comic relief in the midst of the tragedies described are what makes Daniel Silva’s novels stand alone. Death in Vienna is one of his best. The way the story begins with my beloved Eli in danger is story telling at its best. I have cried, laughed, and stared at the words in unbelief throughout this novel. Silva just captures you and draws you into the world of Gabriel and Ari until you just want to know that all will be well and that all will survive. I am writing this review because re-reading Silva’s books remind me of his brilliance but causes me to wonder what happened to his writing in his last three books, in particular, the last one – The Order. This last book is nothing like the Daniel Silva’s writing that I know and admire. He became preachy, hurried in his story line, and there is practically no characterization at all. What happened? I will continue to read Silva’s books because I love Gabriel, Ari and all of the characters. But, please Daniel, take your time, go back and read your first works, see the detail, see the descriptions, see the way you build your characters until we feel like we know them so well. Come back to us Daniel. We need Gabriel and Ari and Eli and all the others to take us into their world and let us see the universe through their eyes and go places we may never get to travel to. Your writing is too precious to lose its way. Come back. Bring your writing back. I’m still a fan and will remain so. July 2021 is coming. And…thank you for giving us Gabriel and Ari.

A Death in Vienna audiobook in series Gabriel Allon

This is another one of Silva’s excellent novels featuring “art restorer” Gabriel Allon and the seemingly eternal quest of Israel’s secret service to achieve justice for Holocaust victims.
Allon’s target this time is a fellow who lives in Vienna by the name of Erich Radek. That’s not his real name; he changed it years before to hide from Israeli detectives. Allon has a “sidekick” during his travels in Vienna and other European cities, his wife Chiara, who ably fills the role as Gabriel’s watchful protector in dangerous situations.
During his quest Allon finds a document written by Irene Allon dated March 19, 1957. The woman is Gabriel’s mother and she details, in chilling testimony, what life and death were like during WWII at the camps of Birkenau and Auschwitz.
The plot is rather circuitous and complicated but justice is finally achieved when Radek is returned to Israel for trial. Unfortunately, the reader may tend to lose a plot thread or two if there is a significant time lapse between readings.

Audiobook A Death in Vienna by Daniel Silva

This is a novel but it actually tells a lot of things that happened during the Holocaust and things that people have forgotten or did not want to face. Episodes like those described in this novel were not unique. Growing up we had the benefit of being aLive right after the war, and the Holocaust was taught to us as a reminder of what could happen. If you’ve ever read this Gabriel Allon series, you will note that the author tries to present both sides of the debate and gives you insight as to why they believe the way they do. Thank you to all who made this book possible and the understanding of underlying evil that could come again in our time. One point that the author did not make was about all those with disabilities who were first chosen by Hitler to be murdered. They were Germans and it was his pursuit of a perfect race. Sound familiar today?

Audio A Death in Vienna narrated by George Guidall

I have just completed the first four books in the Gabriel Allon series. The sun might consider this pure fiction to me it is historical fiction. The story circles around an Israeli agent whose investigations lead him to individuals Who are Nazis and have engaged in war crimes. As I read this book I fact checked everything related to Nazi activities and the activities of others who were engaged in facilitating extermination of 6 million people. The others include the Swiss government, Swiss bankers, Swiss industry, the catholic church and the Vatican. It is easy to say that without the help of the aforementioned The Germans would not have been able to slaughter as many people as they did. The myth that Switzerland was a neutral disengaged state it’s just that. A myth. They were able to monetize the wholesale slaughter of Jews which helped them prolong the war. It was not enough at the Vatican did not condemn Nazi activities, they continued their support of the Nazis in postwar Europe, facilitating their escape to South America By providing money and documents. To this day the swiss have not released or given an accounting of the war booty that they possess. For any of you who want to learn more about the Vatican‘s activities during this period of time look no further than a book titled “Hitler’s pope“. That is a good starting point.

the b ooks in the Allon series are getting to be very much the same. The politics of the author are getting more intrusive to the detriment of the stories. Don’t think I shall bother to order any more.

I first discovered Daniel Silva with ‘The Mark of the Assassin’ around a year ago. His books are really accessible international assassin thrillers, and I say accessible as normally this isn’t my genre. They all feature a super-assassin – often both for the good guys and the bad guys – and the books cover different themes, e.g. Islamic terrorists, Russians, the Holocaust (which this book deals with) etc.
