First of all let me say I have enjoyed all of Donachie’s efforts to date with this one exception. I devour naval fiction novels so why do I give this effort two stars? Lack of action which left me wondering why the author elected to make this latest installment of the career of a failing naval officer a love story. He elected to dedicate his efforts to the rantings of Barclay, Pearce’s infatuation with his mistress get in the way of his ability to take the reader on a wild ride throught his descriptive talents as an naval action writer. He led us through over 90% of his novel before the first wisps of gunpowder fill the air and that was only because his hero was chasing after his mistress to regain her company. Perhaps to some readers this is acceptable but I have worked my way from Forester to Kent to O’Brian, Lambdin and Stockwell to appreciate that British naval fiction had not disappeared. However I like to see the author I read take our favorite character out of the bedroom and onto the quarterdeck.

One of the best seafaring adventure stories extant because it’s so gritty. Unfortunately, the story gets boring because it’s like running on a treadmill – the characters run and run but they never get anywhere. It’s tedious.

A Divided Command audiobook in series John Pearce

I sympathize with other reviewers who complain about this series and this book in particular. I thought Donachie did a good job in bringing up old plot lines and characters, but for gods sake, I wish he would just get on with it. I will probably buy one more in this series and then give up.

These are always an excellent read but all to soon the book is finished but not the saga and one must wait at least another year for the next installment. This seems to be reason d’etre for these type of novels-to extract as much $$$ as possible from the writing exercise. In this case I need to keep a running history on my computer of what I’ve read and when the next installment is due. Usually by that time I have to read the series again to remember the story line.

Audiobook A Divided Command by David Donachie

David Donachie is one of the best in the genre. And there are always loose ends at the end of each story that keep you expectantly waiting for the next volume. Mr donachie has writing and storytelling skills in abundance however continually regurgitates ad nauseam stuff his faithful readership already knows. Presumably for the one person who is stupid enough to start a series I. The middle. Hey on with it and use your skills to pace the narrative swift and sure. You can write stop shilly shallying. You’ve lost me through this.

Same as the last couple in the John Pearce series, recapping of who everyone was in previous books, bit of a story starts in the last 10% then doesn’t go anywhere, I’ve got all of the books in the series and from starting very enjoyable my interest has declined to the point I don’t care what becomes of John Pearce, Emily Barclay and any of the Pelicans or any of the host of villains for that matter as I have bought my last book.

Audio A Divided Command narrated by Peter Wickham

Whilst I enjoyed the narrative concerning the characters involved with JP and the continuing saga, I found the frequent regurgitation of previous events tedious and unnecessary. I assume that DD is trying to make each volume readable by those who have not read the series from book 1, but for the loyal followers who have paid good money for the previous NINE it is a bit much!

Free audio A Divided Command – in the audio player below

As with previous books in the series it does drag on a bit and constant references to previous books is now beginning to annoy . also the saga does not seem to be progressing much…not sure if I will bother with future episodes! Cover illustrations especially on the earlier books do not depict the naval ships of the time. They look more like spanish Galleons!….a pity as the series started very promisingly.
