The plot and style of writing are good as always. David Donachie is a quality author, BUT HIS PUBLISHER HAS STABBED HIM IN THE BACK. This book has now joined the ranks of those edited and proofed by spell check, and the results are a disaster. There are numerous incorrect words such as: is instead of if; the instead of they; be instead of been, and with instead of without. THIS WHOLE SITUATION IS PATHETIC. People pay a lot of money for books, and publishers owe it to us to have a human read their offerings and correct these mistakes that a computer cannot find —none of the mistakes are spelled incorrectly—before going to press. E-books are even worse, where many are typed up in someone’s home office and published on the web only. PUBLISHERS NEED TO CLEAN UP THEIR ACT.

By The Devil to Pay audiobook in series John Pearce
Once again, the John Pearce series has moved forward, so this is just another chapter in the long running battle between John Pearce (wrongly pressed) and Capt. Barclay (wrongly presser). By now, you pretty much know the cast of characters as well as their mental and moral ‘bent’, so the interest comes in the events our protagonist is thrust into and his ability to respond as an ever maturing young naval officer. Author Donachie makes this ‘maturing’ believable and leaves me ready for the next chapter. A good read

Audiobook The Devil to Pay by David Donachie
ok, except the printing of the book was not acceptable. I received a copy with the pages cut at a diagonal. This made reading the book somewhat difficult. Another good book in the series. Donachie leaves the reader hanging at the end in preparation for the next novel in the series. The publisher needs to hire good proof readers. There was a lot of spelling and grammatical errors.
As with the reviews of the previous book in this series, This book again spends too much time rehashing everything from the preceding 11 novels, and does absolutely nothing to move the situation of Pearce and Emily forward by even a single degree.
Like many others I am now rapidly loosing interest, 11 novels stuck on the same rather boring topic is 9 or 10 books too many!
The author really needs to address this issue, write Emily Barclay out, she is just too dull to be of any interest to the reader, give her husband and his allies their comeuppance and let John Pearce get on with some serious swashbuckling adventures.

Audio The Devil to Pay narrated by Peter Wickham
Firstly I must say that I was very disappointed by the poor editorial standards; with numerous typographical and several continuity errors. These were far less common in the early books in this series. Sadly it did interfere with the pleasure of my reading experience. I read the paperback version so am surprised that these mistakes had not been corrected since initial publication.
The story of Lt Pearce and the Pelicans has been refreshingly different from the traditional Hornblower, Ramage and Bolitho novels in that John Pearce is an unlikely hero with many flaws. His evolving affair with his former Captain’s wife the brave and dignified Emily needs to be refreshed and the long drawn out quarrel between Pearce and Capt Barclay and the Captains supporter Admiral Hotham has become frankly rather dull. It detracts from the evolution of Pearce as a naval officer and as a man. I hope that his renewed friendship with Henry Digby can develop into something deeper and more complex than that he has with his dependable rogues, The Pelicans. The new character of the young Master Dorling has real promise for the future.

While I agree with some reviewers that this latest book in the John Pearce series does not take the story forward by any great degree, this was still an extremely enjoyable read. Important minor steps in the plot blend well with a well written (if you ignore the several printing errors … or as I read it in the kindle version then ‘typing errors’?) sequence of adventurous events, human interaction, against a historical back drop… which left me wanting more. The last chapter left me hanging in the air…. please please Mr Donachie let us have your next book as soon as able so we can follow the exploits of our accidental naval officer and the rest of the Pelicans….. but lets make the progress we would like to see…the comeuppance of Barcley and Admiral Hotham, and if there are battles, prize money, and daring do along the way, then all for the best.
