I bought the Audible version but am leaving a review here for Kindle.
This is a decent mystery with 2 plot lines—one in the past and the other in present-time. The plot lines eventually intersect, but there’s a subplot that I suspect the author added to introduce more new characters. And red herrings.
There were so many characters that I added each new character to my iPhone notes. That helped but it’s hard keeping 30 characters straight when listening to Audible. More, it didn’t help that I was not invested in the two detective protagonists’ lives.
Getting through the book was difficult, because the pacing is slow and the little action there is drags in the middle. I was also annoyed that flashbacks were awkward to follow in the Audible version. It’s probably easier to read flashbacks with the Kindle version.
I bought this book in December 2017 and stopped listening so many times. That in itself is odd, because I usually like the Audible version better.

And Justice There Is None audiobook in series Duncan Kincaid / Gemma James Mystery Novels
First let me say that I am a fan of British mysteries. Deborah Crombie is one of the best. I have read the whole series and loved them all. If you can I suggest reading them in order to really know what is going on with Duncan and Gemma. This series ranks right up there with pd James, Martha Grimes, Elizabeth George……I for one cannot get enough ….I anxiously await each new one
I loved the sense of place, neighborhood and head space of the characters. This is the first book I’ve read in the series but the characters’ past was well presented and the whole read was like sinking in an overstuffed chair. It was comfortably compelling and I didn’t want it to end. This is the first but not the last of the series I will enjoy.

Audiobook And Justice There Is None by Deborah Crombie
First Sentence: He ran, as so many others ran, the black anorak protecting him from the mist, the reflective patches on his trainers gleaming as he passed under the street lamps.
There are big changes in the lives of Gemma James and Duncan Kincaid. They are expecting a child together, moving into a large new house, having Duncan’s son come live with them and her son, and Gemma has been promoted to Inspector.
Gemma’s first case, in her new position, is the murder of Dawn Arrowood, beautiful young wife of wealthy antiques dealer, Karl. She is also the lover of a young antiques dealer, Alex Dunn, and she is six weeks pregnant. The case is slow in progressing as all Gemma’s suspects have very good alibis. Things become more challenging when Duncan uncovers a past murder that fits the same profile. Now they need to find the link between the two killings.
Crombie is one of a few authors that does a good job combining her protagonists personal and professional lives without becoming overly sappy about the former or losing the tension in the latter. In fact, one thing I enjoy is the slow, almost imperceptible rise in the level of suspense throughout the book. I also appreciate her occasional wry humor as when she talks about real investigations being unlike “American cop shows on the telly, where the tough guys always got their man by the end of the hour.”
Unfortunately, the things that bothered me outweighed the elements I did like. There were redundant references to Dawn meeting Alex, as well as characters feeling an instant recognition toward another, once even a dog. There were a lot of coincidences. A good deal of the book dealt with an unknown narrator telling a story – in italics. One element of the ending was way too predictable but well handled in spite of it and there were several good twists along the way.
While I feel a stronger editor would have been a benefit, I like Crombie’s writing. This was a good, interesting, traditional police procedural and I plan on reading more of her books.

Audio And Justice There Is None narrated by Michael Deehy
Another brilliant crime mystery from Deborah Crombie. The characters just leap off the page and her ‘sense of place’ is extraordinary indicating a huge amount of research before putting pen to paper. Of course the plot is complex and intriguing with numerous red herrings to keep the reader guessing. A favourite technique of the author is to delve into the past, sometimes over several generations, to identify the first happenings which lead to murder some generations later. This technique is again employed to good effect here.
Kincaid (Is he now “Mr Perfect”?) and Gemma (Not Ms Perfect as yet) combine their talents with lots of emotional overtones on their relationship
to solve the crime. The final chapter ties all the loose ends together making for another very satisfying read.

I began reading the Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James books in the middle of the series – Water Like a Stone – and was hooked but, to be honest, I wouldn’t have read all Deborah Crombie’s 18 in the series had I started at the first which Is good but not as rounded as the later novels and I held off commenting on any until completed the marathon. Firstly, I can say, without fear or favour, that I thoroughly enjoyed all of the mysteries. They are all whodunnits but centred around an expanding group of families and friends. While each book covers a separate mystery and murder(s) there is the recurrent theme of the family that runs through all the stories – and often murders come to Duncan and Gemma – separately and together. Because of the titles there is no need for a spoiler alert to the readers of the first book to know that Duncan and Gemma become an item and then a family – not as quickly as one might think. Having read a number of books that have been turned into TV series I’m surprised that no-one has attempted to turn what I believe to be one of the finest of the genre – I have not come across another series that so economically but finely draws its main characters. However, I notice that many of the current TV series have relatively few central characters and that perhaps the increasing cast of friends and family (despite losing a few on the way) might put producers off.
