The first book I read on Martial Arts philosophy was ZEN IN THE MARTIAL ARTS by Joe Hyams. I have read or own nearly EVERY book on Bruce Lee since 1977, trained with many of his students (concepts and core), and have been a recognized Jeet Kune Do instructor since 2000. There has been little offer for martial arts mindset while most books are regurgitated material poorly opinionated. Until this… Shannon uses her personality and perspective with much care while conveying her father\’s philosophy and has taken the Bruce Lee brand in a direction that has been much needed. Her writing has actually cleared up many questions I have had over other author\’s and instructor\’s interpretations. I FINALLY understand a deeper meaning of finding the \”cause of your ignorance\” which today would be called \”blind spots\”. Ever since MMA has entered the scene martial arts have become thuggish with a lack of philosophy. This is a shame considering Bruce Lee invented it (look at the first scene in ENTER THE DRAGON and try changing my mind) and lived his life trying to convince others of the classical messes going on. I\’m hoping a younger generation of Martial Artists and those interested in philosophy in general pick up this book.

Concentration is the root of all the higher abilities. Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own. It’s not the daily increase but daily decrease. Hack away at the unessential. It is not how much you have learned, but how much you have absorbed from what you have learned. The best techniques are the simple ones executed right. Simplicity is the key to brilliance. Use only that which works, and take it from any place you can find it. For apratiṣṭhita Bruce Lee\’s quotes, above, are like a finger pointing at the moon…

Audiobook Be Water, My Friend: The Teachings of Bruce Lee by Shannon Lee

There are really no words to really describe this book. This book had me turning every page and I could not out the book down. Page after page is filled with the most beautiful teachings Bruce Lee has passed down. There are revelations that you WILL experience in reading this book. As far as the approach of this book, it is written not as a guide but another way to look at life and how to really discover your true self. As someone who struggles with PTSD this book showed me tools to overcome a lot of these limiting beliefs I may have. It helped me let those bad experiences simply just be a part of me and accept it. I can go on and on about this book and how it points you into the direction of self discovery and shows you how to approach life\’s obstacles that it may throw at you. I highly recommend this book to anyone, even if you read a lot of self help books, this is one right there next to The Four Agreements. Excellent job, 10 out of 10.

I thought Shannon did a great job on this. She is very intelligent and passionate with telling a story that anyone who was interested in Bruce Lee would enjoy. I came away from reading this with a better outlook and appreciation on life. It’s a good read.

I\’ve read many philosophy books in the past few years from authors like Napoleon Hill (Think and Grow Rich), Jim Rohn (Leading an Inspired Life), James Allen (As A Man Thinketh), and dozens of others. This is by far one of my favorite books. It\’s a shame Kobe Bryant, a great fan of Bruce Lee isn\’t here to read this, he read and watched everything Bruce Lee. Shannon Lee couldn\’t have done better by her father in putting his words and hers into an inspiring personal growth book. Shannon perfectly put Bruce Lee\’s genius into a must read.
