Becoming Duchess Goldblatt

What an amazing story. I know its real as I know so many people in the DG tribe. Im not a member. Ive stayed on the outside, watching my friends and wondering if they were all drinking a little too much kool-aid. I state this to say that you dont need to be a part of that world to be swept away by this remarkable story. Anonymous shares deep stories to show how low one can fall from life altering events. I felt so much for her. I wanted to hold her as she describes the loneliness. But in creating this beloved character on social media, she created a family in the best sense of the word. One that is chosen. Those who are always on the outside understand the importance of finding your tribe and the duchess has done just that. The filmmaker in me saw a beautiful indie film of brokenness and recovery while reading it. But Im sure Hollywood will have Meryl play the role…and anonymous deserves it. She deserves every good thing coming her way for the joy she has given to so many. Oh…and to my friends who I secretly judged from the outside, I was the silly one. Pass the kool-aid and give me a mug…preferably with one with the duchess face on it. Read this book!

Im not sure how I discovered Duchess Goldblatt, but I am most certainly glad I did. She is absolutely delightful on Twitter, and if she had just presented a book of tweets I probably wouldve been perfectly happy. You dont have to follow Duchess Goldblatt on Twitter to enjoy this book, but if you dont follow her you really dont know what youre missing.

We have been given a book that is truly a gift. This is a story of a woman who is struggling as many women do. This is a sweet and bittersweet book that had me tears up often. Even though I often had tears in my eyes this book is a delight. Im sure I laughed more often than I cried. The fact that she is a huge of Lyle Lovett does not hurt. Honestly every time hes mentioned it gave me a spark of joy in my very soul. I stretched out this book as long as I possibly could because I just didnt want to have to put it down. I solved this problem in part by getting the audiobook so that I could listen to Lyle Lovett read his portion of the conversation.

I think I would dearly love to meet Anonymous one day so she could give me a big hug and call me honey bunch. I would even settle for rascal.

I enjoy the whimsical Duchess Goldblatt on Twitter, but I didn’t even know I wanted to read this book until I read Julie Klam’s review of “Becoming Duchess Goldblatt” in The New York Times. Less than 24 hours later, I had devoured it all. The fictional character whose love is real (as she frequently says) sprung from the mind of an anonymous woman who has faced very painful losses and struggled to create something good out of the rubble. And she has — with wit, humor and honesty.

I used a Twitter tool to figure out that I started following Duchess Goldblatt about 6 years ago. Over the years, she has made me smile, think, and look for kindness in the least likely places. She also wished me happy birthday, months after I teasingly asked her to. When I heard that her creator was writing a memoir, I was a little bit sad, because keeping her fictional persona anonymous made her more real to me. But now that I’ve read it, Duchess Goldblatt is more complex and wise for me, but still the same. As a bonus, I now know another person whom I didn’t before: a woman who’s had a difficult life, who’s been treated unfairly, who’s managed to find ways to save herself and learn how much she deserves true love and friendship. I heartily recommend Becoming Duchess Goldblatt to anyone. Buy it now. But if you don’t know Her Grace going in, set the book aside for at least a few months and follow her on Twitter so you can appreciate this story.

This book is magic and poetry. Duchess Goldblatts small poetical tweets are perfect for weary souls. The author, Anonymous, struggles with cumulative losses and heartbreaks in her life and feels as though she has nothing to offer friends or anyone else after an unexpected and crushing divorce. She creates Duchess Goldblatt, in part to perhaps reconnect with humans safely and anonymously, orfor those of us who fiercely love words and literatureto have a safe place to say things we otherwise might not. Words have power, both to crush and to heal. This memoir is a joy to read, and reminds any of us who have experienced loss of any kind that we are not really alone. We just need to look for our tribe. Keep an eye out for ruffs, thats usually the first clue we are DGs faithful followers. Thank you, your grace.
