We learn some back story in this short tale. We also get some very good, authentic-seeming combat sequences that involve the father of the main thread central character. We have a good character developed here from the most cautious outlines given to us in the main sequence of the series.
I sort of like having a quick little story, well written, to amplify the main sequence. In Big Pete, we get some conversation among the soldiers that certainly seems realistic to me, a common civilian.
A good addition to the growing body that makes up the Rookie Privateer series.

Big Pete audiobook in series Privateer Tales
I like all of the Privateer Tales but you need to really read at least the first few in order for best enjoyment. If your a stickler about such things you can find a couple of editing errors in the entire series and my only true negative comment is that they seem to put 1 book out of place in the series (the one where the little thief first meets the crew wish i could remember book number its like 7 ?). The series is great, nice plot steady movement throughout some violence (detailed) and the sexual content is not detailed merely there as humorous or fact of life that these characters are people you can become invested in. Try the first 2 books and if you like them half as much as I did you will probably find yourself reading the entire series

Audiobook Big Pete by Jamie McFarlane
In Big Pete, author Jamie McFarlane redeems himself from a lackluster 3rd book in the series to come back with an excellent future military tale of how the main character of the Privateer Series’ mother and father first met (although the book doesn’t come out and say it). It’s a first-rate tale of how a future Marine goes after a downed pilot to rescue her, only for both of them to get trapped behind enemy lines. Want more? Read it for yourself. McFarlane is one of my favorite new authors.

Audio Big Pete narrated by Mikael Naramore
Privateers is a good read with well-developed characters and an entertaining story line. It is the first series that I have read in a very long time that had well developed foundational science on which the rest of the story framework is based. The use of AI, smart fabric, and Internet of things, was very well integrated into the story and extended into the future. The only nits I have to pick with the series are the improbable interrelationships between some of the characters, the illogical expansion from the Milky Way to the Dwingeloo galaxy, which is 10 million light-year away from Earth. There are many other choices much closer, such as Andromeda, at 2.5 million. Additionally, it is unlikely that the 100 to 400 billion stars within the Milky Way could have been explored. One last nick pick, was the reference to the Marny Bertrand, a former Marine, who is referred to as a Master Chief, which is a Navy rank. The correct rank for a Marine E9 would be Master Gunnery Sergeant, or Gunny.

Again, this is really a short story, that could have been bypassed. Had I realized it was a short story I would not have purchased it. Since then I’ve joined Kindle Unlimited, Since it allows me to read most of Kindle books for free (monthly subscription). I did enjoy “Big Pete” and it would have been a good stand alone novel had the author decided to do that. The Privateer Tales are really a good series, just make sure if you are buying the books make sure you know the type or length of the book. 🙂
