how many cliches can one author use? ex military, ruggedly tall dark and handome, always doing the right thing even if it’s the dumbest thing in the world? this was dull, ill conceived and just down right boring. such bad writing and such one dimensional characters. why do i let amazon ratings help me pick books? one of the great mysteries of mankind.

Foreign Deceit audiobook in series David Wolf

Sergeant David Wolf is a member of the Sluice County Sheriff ‘s Department. While out investigating a murder, he barely escapes becoming a murder victim himself. His ex-wife (and mother of his son), is released from rehab and he wonders if she will stay clean this time. And, Wolf is waiting to see if he will be appointed as the new Sheriff by county council members and the mayor…

Wolf receives news, via his mother, that his brother has committed suicide in Lecco, Italy. Since he does not believe that John really killed himself, Wolf travels to Northern Italy to try to prove John was murdered, without causing too much upset in the Italian Carabinieri (and without becoming another victim). Officer Lia Parente is assigned to assist him with his investigation of John’s last night…

Finally! A mystery series that looks like it will be worth reading! I was immersed in this story from beginning to end. There was a great plot with an intriguing subplot and both were interesting. I must say, I never expected either conclusion. I felt like I travelled from Rocky Point, Colorado (USA) to Lecco, Italia and back with Sergeant Wolf. With him, I followed the clues through the twists and turns and there were plenty of surprises to keep me entertained along the way. The ending made me want to read the next book now!

Audiobook Foreign Deceit by Jeff Carson

This book isn’t badly written but it sure is bad. The hero is supposed to be an ex special forces badass who is a deputy sheriff in a hick town in Colorado that is clearly beneath him. He goes to Italy to investigate his brother’s death which he is convinced is murder not suicide. He doesn’t use a single skill from his SEAL days or whatever he was. He mostly reacts and pretty much acts like a complete and total amateur. He probably should have gotten killed a half dozen times but for his dumb luck. There’s nothing interesting about him, the plot, the dialog, etc. To say it’s implausible is generous but irrelevant. What doesn’t work is that it’s obvious David Wolf is supposed to be a Mitch Rapp, Scott Harvarth, etc. type — it’s just he has none of their skills or personality.

Audio Foreign Deceit narrated by Sean Patrick Hopkins

This is the first book in the David Wolf series – I thought it sucked – it’s boring and just completely unbelievable at points Example: early in the book, a deputy attacks Wolf and tries to kill him by throwing him off a cliff when Wolf and several other officers are sent to find a reported dead body. Wolf fights him off, sending his attacker to the hospital. He never reports the attempted murder and nobody has a problem with him sending one of his fellow cops back to town in an ambulance – seriously? Later, in Italy, Wolf gets the crap beat out of him in a police station – he gets up, pretty much shakes hands with his attackers (all cops) and goes on about his business unharmed. I made to about page 180 before I gave up on it – pretty bad read.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have to say that this one was difficult for me to get through. I wasn’t interested at all in whatever was going on in Italy. I read the character description of Wolf in Rocky Points, Colorado, and that is what interested me. I was pretty disappointed when the story took him to Italy. I lost complete interest.

BUT, I love the characters in this series and I knew that things would get so much better once the author put Wolf back in his home setting. I just started the 4th book in the series (having read the first three this past weekend). I am so happy that I pushed through the first book to get to all this much more interesting and and easier to read storyline.
