Clap When You Land

I wish I was informed that this story contained a lesbian storyline before I brought it. The publisher or Amazon should at least have it mentioned somewhere in the description about the book.

I first learned of the book after hearing a segment about it with Elizabeth Acevado on the Kojo Nnamdi show. It was incredible to hear directly from the author on the show. After hearing about the book, I decided to purchase and read the book. Two days later, I read the book in three sittings, in one day, over approximately four hours. As a 30-year-old adult, I thought to myself, kids should be reading this book instead of, let\’s say, The Tempest. Of course, that is just my opinion, take it for what it is. I believe Acevado\’s book definitely belongs in elementary and junior high school curriculums across the US. I enjoyed all of the book, its imperfections, the character development, and of course, the glimpse if offers between the cultural bridge that exists between so many US Americans and other parts of the world. I say that as a US-born American-Puerto Rican. Cheers three times for the author. Gracias!

This was a well written book about family secrets and how it affects each person differently. How the family deals with the aftermath of the secrets being revealed and their attempt to move forward. We have Camino and Yahaira who are sisters and only find out about each other after the passing of their father. These two girls couldnt be more opposite if they tried. I loved reading about them separately and when they finally came together. When I start reading this story I felt like I was being transported into the Dominican Republic. I saw everything unfold as I read and I loved Acevedos vivid detail to description and the way she showcased the culture. I started reading Elizabeth Acevedo last year and she has quickly become one of my favorite/auto buy authors. Acevedos words are magnetic, so full of passion and they always stay with me for a long time after I read. This book is written in verse which I normally not a fan of but Acevedo as usual had me hanging on each and every word. I highly recommend you read this book, The Poet X, and With The Fire On High which are written by this author as well.

As is everything Acevedo writes, this is fantastic and heartbreakingly good. A story of a plane crash, sisters that didnt know the other existed, and how to make a family work after losing a vital piece. Its written in verse like the first book she wrote was, The Poet X and this one didnt hit all my notes personally like the first but I still felt all the sadness and sweetness when I finished it. These are such fast reads and worth every page!

When you touch down on this soil, you must clap when you land. Clap When You Land was my most anticipated book of 2020. Elizabeth Acevedo is one of my favorite authors so I could not add this book to my TBR list fast enough. This review will not give the book justice. I have no words. It was a beautiful story, with beautiful characters all told in Acevedos amazing prose. The subject matter is one that often goes untold, especially in YA books. Family secrets, grief, resentment. There were just so many elements that made this story whole; poverty, class, and colorism being among them. I enjoyed the alternating point of views as well as the secondary characters. This book touched my heart in ways that were both heartbreaking and uplifting, devastating but also hopeful. I love the fact that in each book I have read by Elizabeth Acevedo I close the book and know that I have taken something away from its pages. This time was no different. In addition to this, I was not at all familiar with Flight AA587 ( the second deadliest plane crash in American history) prior to reading. Absolutely heartbreaking.
