One of my favorite of the Horatio Hornblower books, Flying Colours is in many ways the opposite of the previous book Ship of the Line. Where “Ship” is a plot-driven adventure filled with action and sea battles, “Colours” is a character-driven land-based drama that centers on Hornblower’s capture and journey to Paris, to be dubiously tried by Napoleon for war crimes. The circumstances drive us deeper into Horatio’s psyche than we’ve been before, reminding us that Forester was not just a great storyteller, but a writer of depth and insight into human nature.

Flying Colours audiobook in series Horatio Hornblower (chronological order)
For a Hornblower story, this doesn’t have much naval action, but it does a very nice job of wrapping up the events at the end of the prior book in the series, in which the Sutherland is sacrificed to tear up four French ships enough to disable them so the British fleet can finish them later. There is a lot of suspense and a lot of introspection and personal interaction by Hornblower, which I found more interesting than in past books.

Audiobook Flying Colours by C. S. Forester
Flying Colours is the final of the three books that chronicle Hornblower’s career as a captain. Following immediately after the apocalyptic end to Ship of the Line, it follows Hornblower — now awaiting trial for piracy by a furious Bonaparte — as he tries to escape and get back to England.
Following as it does after the most exciting book in the series, this is a bit of a letdown. It’s slower and the drama is more in Hornblower’s mind and heart than anywhere else. He faces not only execution at Napoleon’s hands, but — even if he escapes — trial and ruin in England for his surrender of the Sutherland. His best friend Lt. Bush is crippled, he’s cut off from his pregnant wife and secret love. He’s at the lowest point of his life.
Of course, you know he’s not going to give up. Flying Colours contrasts the vivid action of the novels by showing Hornblower finding his courage in life — willing to face his own personal problems and demons — to find the will to go on and try to overcome the seemingly insurmountable obstacles in his way.
It is in this book that the drama of the two previous ones finally pays off. Other have spoiled the plot, but I will note that even if Horatio triumphs, it is not without sacrifice and loss. And the ending has suitable irony — and fits perfectly with Hornblower’s democratic character.
The book does drag a little at times and I was disappointed that Hornblower seemed to forget about his surviving crew once he’d escaped. That knocks the rating down. But otherwise, this a stirring conclusion to the “Captain” trilogy and leaves enough plot threads open to send the reader off to buy the next volume.

Audio Flying Colours narrated by Christian Rodska
I love the Hornblower series and purchased all 11 volumes at one time. The volume entitled FLYING COLOURS (which is volume 8) published by Back Bay – Little, Brown and Company was missing pages 123-154. Page 122 jumped to page 155. Page 155 -186 were fine, but in this book, instead of running from 186 to the end of the book, it started over at page 155, THEN ran to the end of the book. Maybe this was intended to be freak volume and its worth lots of money like stamp errors? Unfortunately, Pages 123-154 seem to be a very important part of this part of the Hornblower Saga. I do not believe I have ever had a problem with any book ordered from Amazon, this is a first for me.

The Hornblower Series takes place during the Napoleonic Wars. One does not need to know history to enjoy the stories, but they will be richer if one does. The same holds true for the technical aspects of the narrative. Forester is known to be accurate and it is, therefore, possible to learn a bit about sailing ships. However, a good reader should be able to move with the flow of the story even if unable to follow the specialized vocabulary. The first time I read these books, I doubt that I knew more than a dozen of the technical words, but the stories simply grabbed hold of my imagination. They remain great favorites.
