Despite having watched all the shows, I was pleasantly surprised that reading the book didn’t feel redundant at all. The gripping sensation of being “on the edge of your seat” remained, compelling me to keep turning the pages without interruption. Undoubtedly, it is a skillfully written book that holds its own unique appeal, even for those familiar with the televised adaptations.

Darkly Dreaming Dexter audiobook

“Dexter” has secured its place as one of my all-time favorite TV series, and my curiosity led me to explore the book series that served as its foundation. To my delight, the experience exceeded my expectations! Surprisingly, having watched the show beforehand enhanced my reading journey. As I delved into the book, Michael C. Hall’s iconic portrayal of Dexter Morgan echoed in my mind, almost as if he was personally narrating the story for me. Similarly, reading Alex Cross books conjures Morgan Freeman’s captivating voice, adding an extra layer of immersion.

It’s fascinating to encounter familiar characters in both the book and TV series, albeit with slight variations. This first book in the series delves into the character known as the Ice Truck Killer during the first season of the show. The reunion with these beloved characters left me with a warm and nostalgic feeling, rekindling my connection with them, which I had sorely missed since the TV series concluded. I’m already looking forward to continuing my journey with the rest of the book series, eager to delve deeper into Dexter’s world.

Audiobook Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay

Audio Darkly Dreaming Dexter narrated by Jeff Lindsay

Jeff Lindsay’s debut novel in the series of four reads like many first novels. It may feel a bit unsteady in character development and relationships, with a heavy focus on the main character who also serves as the first-person narrator. Nevertheless, “Darkly Dreaming Dexter” marks an excellent beginning to a new crime series with a captivating twist. Our protagonist is a misanthropic villain, raised by his father to be almost, but not quite, human. This concept, amid the bloodlust, murder, and crime-fighting, allows for an ongoing critique of the façades of everyday social life, ironically humanizing the dangerous criminals we encounter in the news, making them seem more like us.

The clipped and fast-paced plot of “DDD” is buoyed by Lindsay’s evident delight in writing, which reflects in Dexter’s internal monologue – filled with wry, slightly askew, and self-conscious puns, alliterations, and reminders that ordinary troubles like emotions do not affect Dexter because he simply lacks them.

For those coming to Dexter after the TV series, there might be a surprise in how similar the two are initially. However, as the story progresses, the “Dexter” books diverge significantly from the show. One intriguing aspect is the TV show’s omission of mystical and occult elements (which gain prominence later in the book series) and the choices it makes regarding which characters live, die, and receive more substantial development, including a significant plot point concerning Deborah.

Overall, while enjoying the TV show, readers might find the books far more engaging, gruesome, playful, and suspenseful. This first Dexter novel isn’t perfect, but it remains a compelling read. Sticking with the series is recommended, as it evolves into something distinct from the TV show and becomes even better.

However, this series may not be for fans seeking traditional serial killer vicarious voyeurism, focusing on understanding the mind of the maniac. Instead, it caters more to aficionados of off-kilter crime fiction with an affinity for authors like Chuck Palahniuk, Kinky Friedman, and Nero Wolfe. If you enjoy this kind of writing, “Darkly Dreaming Dexter” comes highly recommended.
