Dear God: Honest Prayers to a God Who Listens

Dear God,

Thank you for your children, like Bunmi, who share honestly and deeply their souls so that we can share ours, too.

Thank you for helping her write a book that I read from cover to cover the day I received it because I couldn’t stop because I didn’t want to.

Thank you for allowing me to read Bunmi’s letters that drew my tears which had not yet dried before I laughed out loud at the letter which followed. Over and over again.

I read this book in one sitting I couldnt put it down. Bunmi writes her letters to God with such heartbreaking honesty, such doubt-filled-but-fierce faith, and such compassion for others who are struggling. It is a modern book of Psalms, with the same joy and despair, grittiness and poetry. I want to give this book to all my friends.

I expected to laugh, because Bunmi is the funniest person of whom Im aware. Instead, I cried. Of course her way with words is at its finest when it is put to the finest of tasks. Her open sharing of this beautiful, heartfelt prayertry (its prayer plus poetry and I made it up) gave words to the feelings I have about God – but, more importantly, to the feelings I wish and hope to have. I, too, am afraid of the pain that will be required to be able to few this kind of faith, but I, too, am signing up. It gives my soul courage to know that we might not be friends in this life (pity, because, seriously, she is SO FUNNY) but I hope there are supernatural forces that enable us to be friends in the next without imposing one anyone because I know we are trying to get to the same place and willing to go to some crazy places to get there. Bunmi, thank you. You are so much more than hilarious, which, from me, is really saying something. Thanks and praise to the God who made us both, and bless you for letting your light shine

This book assures me that my talks with God, though most times not modeled like the Lord’s Prayer are heard as genuinely uniquely me. God hears. Just speak from the heart.

I went from, Wow, Im glad Im not that bad off! to Wow, a wish I was that well! Thank you for taking me on this journey with you! A quick read, but so much content! I laughed and cried (a lot) and was inspired and comforted. Im not an overly religious person, but I related to each and every entry. I know I will come back to these words again and again. This was beautiful and so are you!
