As this story begins it is a few weeks after the events of the previous novel (A COLD DISH) and Walt is still recovering from those traumatic events, particularly the abrupt end of a promising romance, that left him with some regrets and a new companion – a very large dog. He is pulled out of his doldrums by a new case, one that had roots decades ago, and closer to home than Walt found comfortable. As Walt continued his investigations he uncovered more crimes, both past and present, that would probably have been better left buried.
Those who came to this series through the TV series (as I did) will find that various characters, backstories and circumstances are different in the books. Most notable of the differences involve the character of Lucien who occupies a much more significant role in the novels than in the TV show and the complete absence of ‘Branch Connally’ who played a major role in the TV series Both series though, offer up excellent stories involving interesting characters in a setting that always features prominently in the story.

Death Without Company series Walt Longmire
I came upon the Longmire books by way of the Longmire TV show. I watched the entire series before I began reading the books. I think the show, while vastly different from the books does the character justice. But this isn’t a review of a TV show, it’s supposed to be a review of the book so here goes. The book spoke with Longmire’s distinctive voice. It contained just the right amount of character and mystery. There were plenty of twists and turns, just enough action to balance out the cerebral musings, and a great ending. Read this book. You won’t be disappointed.

Audiobook Death Without Company by Craig Johnson
Craig Johnson says the darnedest things. And the way he says them pulls me into the world of Abrosoka County for the duration. Greed and a rough start lead to abused and murder. Of course, Walt Longmire sorts it while avoiding death and suffering on a slightly broken heart.

Audio Death Without Company narrated by George Guidall
I had a tough time actually getting into the story – but when I did I couldn’t put it down! Craig Johnson has created a visual of a most intriguing man – handsome and sexy are the words that come to mind first – but more importantly he is an honor bound Sheriff and a loving and very loyal man not just to his daughter but also to his staff, deputies, and town folks. The story is GREAT too – a mystery solved!

Craig Johnson’s consistently good writing is a pleasure to read. The cast of characters is well developed. His use of magical realism adds to the characters instead of being a trick to escape poor plotting. I’d recommend his books to anyone.
I have nothing but praise for this author. I started with the A&E Television Series, moved to the books when A&E canceled it. Read ALL of the books, and was very happy when Netflix picked Longmire up themselves. The books are enough like the series to make my enjoy the series, but there is enough difference that I never feel like comparing the one to the other. The characters all seem like old friends, and I find myself wishing that there were more books, and more TV episodes. I am an addict, and have binged-out on all of it. I have nothing but praise for this author. But I guess I already said that… up there.
