I enjoyed this book a lot, so much that I read the entire book in one sitting. I can promise thats rare for myself. Its an amazing story about Kristas journey to discover who she really is, while facing obstacles like getting through the stigma of homosexuality in both the South and Christian religion and revealing her true self to family and friends. Being raised in the same small Southern town and same Christian denomination as Krista, I can understand what obstacles she was faced with coming out.

Reading through her story, I did learn some valuable lessons in the process. Here are a few things that stood out to me in the book:

1. Always Be Your True Self: Her story reveals her struggle with being different with the norm of her culture. Both the South and Christianity are infamous for the beliefs about homosexuality, which are viewed not only as wrong, but also sinful and a one-way ticket straight to Hell. While fighting what she felt was right and what society told her was right, she overcomes and becomes true to herself. I learned that no matter how you are raised or what you are told, internally you know what is right and wrong. You know who you are better than anyone else, so dont let anyone tell you otherwise.

2. The Things You Were Raised Up To Believe As Truth, Are Not Always Truth: One of the beliefs about homosexuality is that you choose to be gay, youre not born that way. While Im a heterosexual male, I cannot speak from experience, but I can speak on hearing many experiences from the LGBT community. Whether or not being gay can be a choice, Ill never know, but I can say that there are gay people who are born with the attraction to the same sex. Krista realized that she wasnt born defective, she was just born herself. Despite what she was told her entire life, she knows for herself that she was born this way. There are many things people are raised up to believe, but its not always true. If someone was raised to think someone of a different culture or ethnicity are beneath their own, would you say this is true?

3. Be Transparent About Your True Beliefs: One thing that Ive learned from different people and books, along with Kristas, is that you should always be transparent about your beliefs. I say this because when you do this, you weed out the people who would only bring you down. For example, the people who were friends that spread rumors or did not support her becoming her true self, they would have only brought her down or held her back. This process also reveals who your true friends and loyal family members are. It was difficult revealing her homosexuality to her family and friends, but once they realized this is who she really is, it made their relationships stronger. Real friends and family are there for you, through thick and thin.

I would recommend this book to anyone, whether youre Christian or atheist, gay or straight. You may not agree with some of her own beliefs, but you can definitely learn something from her story.

The title itself gave me a pretty good idea that this would be a fun read! I’m so glad that I got this. The format of short personal stories works out well, and I wanted more when I reached the end. Self-discovery is the great equalizer. Following the author’s journey as she learned about herself will make you think about your own life. I didn’t expect to catch glimpses of myself in her stories, but I think everyone can relate to parts of this. This is my big recommendation.

Audiobook Does This Bible Belt Make Me Look Gay? by Krista Doyle

It was a good book, maybe not fantastical, but real, and that’s what matters most. I can relate to much of this book, although I still have a great deal of my family that is still, even after 7 years, very hard hearted toward my wife and myself. I can only hope that one day we will experience the acceptance that is mentioned in this book. Thanks for writing and sharing your story.

I relate to a lot of stuff in this little book. It is a pretty accurate and honest take on what can happen when you come to terms with being a lesbian. Thank you for writing it.

Such great stories! You take real struggles and tell them as funny memories. The journey of being afraid to be who you are, facing that fear, and finding love at the end of the conversation is an inspiration of what the world needs for the gay agenda!
