Dragonsdawn

This is one of the series that I read that began to peak my interest in Fantasy. I think this is also the series that began my love of dragons! That was so many years ago that I thought it would be fun to listen to the series while I was at work or while I was crafting. I also decided that I would read them in chronological order this time around. And this series is still wonderful!

This book is about arriving at Pern, settling Pern, thread falling and them creating the dragons. I would not recommend reading this book first if you have never read the Pern series. However, this is a great book and I have thoroughly enjoyed reliving it. There are only a couple of characters that I love in this book as well as a few that I despise. It is mostly the history of how they came and that story is fascinating. The dragonets are amazing and it makes me want one all over again. The first dragons that are born and the bond that is made between dragon and rider is amazing. I find it so emotional and enthralling.

I thoroughly recommend reading this series if you have not, but look up the preferred reading order, not the chronological order.

My mother-in-law introduced me to this book and gave me her copy! I love books you can immerse yourself in! Anne MacCaffrey is an EXCELLENT author! Her characters are rich and vibrant and the exploring of the new planet of Pern is full of excitement and danger! She can describe the happenings and you feel as if you are involved in all that is happening in the story! The land, plants, special animals of Pern and how humans must adapt to survive are fascinating! From the adults to the children in the story, I found myself glued to the book. I especially enjoyed when the Irish boy and girl discover the little “dragons”, and how they grow and become so important to the colonists survival. Read and see what happens to the 5000 or so colonists that now must call PERN home. From this book you will want to read the next book, and then the next, and then the next….

This is my most treasured author. Ann Mccaffery has taken me to worlds that no one else could have dreamed of… The Dragonriders of Pern series is by far her best work. I read it the first time as a young woman and now 20 + years later I have read and re-read all of her books more times than I can count. I am starting again at the beginning and Ann Mccaffery still transports to another world just like the very first time.

I first read Dragonflight (the first of the Pern books written decades ago) some time in the late ’70s and was hooked, continuing to read new Pern books ever since..

Dragonsdawn takes us all the way back to the original colonization of Pern, teaching us where all the place names came from, how the Dragons came into being and how the technology had devolved to the Medieval cultural structure that we know so well from the later (chronologically) books that follow.

I’m in the process of re-reading the series and I’ve tried, this time, to read them in the chronological order rather than the order of publication. Dragonsdawn is listed as Pern Book 9 but really should be read first in order to “start the story at the beginning”

I LOVE this book. In fact I bought this EXTRA copy because I was craving re-reading it and all my books were in storage, not expected home anytime soon! I couldn’t find it fast enough so this price couldn’t be beat! I love the worlds of Anne McCaffrey and I MISS HER DEARLY! I’ve read and loved every one of her books, numerous times. They get me through rough times & have for many decades. Thank you Anne wherever in the Cosmos you are now. Your passing brings me to tears still to this day. Your legacy lives on with many authors who benefited from writing with you on many books.
