and finally, we learn about the second Threadfall, and how the starstones came into being. I would have liked more about the Starstones, yet there is SO much history that gets explained, that is a minor issue. We see the birth of the Harperhall and the Teaching Ballads!
The weyrs face the first Thread after the first Interval, and while most of the population believes Thread is returning, there is one Lord Holder that does not. We see the beginning of Pern’s justice system being given its first test, and are told some of the punishments meted out as sentences for various crimes.
There is a lot going on in this book, the colonists are losing much of the tech that arrived with them, such as; the abacus and Stonehenge were both useful in lieu of the items that are no longer operational.
Some day, I will read through the series in a chronological order…maybe. LOL
Dragonseye is a great read. The characters are well done, some you will boo, others you will cheer, and as always, there are the dragons. The fire lizards do not make an appearance, although they are mentioned.

Dragonseye audiobook in series Original Dragonriders of Pern (abridged)

This world would be hard pressed to find another writer like Anne McCaffery and her team of people. You never find coarse or foul langue in any of her Stories. The editing is matchless and her ability to create characters makes reading a delight. I have read everything she’s written and can only wish for more. Thank you for such enjoyable hours of enjoyment. Nancy

Dragonseye audiobook by Anne McCaffrey

My least favorite of the series. While the book did provide a lot of world building information the story line was scattered and the character plotting wasn’t as good and I did not connect with the characters. I’m a fan of this world and have been reading it since the mid-70’s (it’s my go to series for escape) and have overall loved each book of the series it speaks well that with so many books this is the first that I felt fell short.

Dragonseye audio narrated by Adrienne Barbeau

In this book, Dragonseye (aka Red Star Rising, the Second Chronicle of Pern), you meet up with familiar attitudes. Close to the second pass (about 250 years after the colonists landed) Chalkin, a Lord Holder of Brita Hold, is abusing his responsibility to his hold and refuses to prepare for Threadfall. The Weyrleaders and many other holders are trying to do what they can to overrun his authority. Unfortunately you need a unanimous vote to impeach a Lord Holder, and some don’t believe the stories. Artist Iantine may offer a solution, but can they save Brita Hold in time?

This book answers some questions like:
Where did the firelizards go? And why don’t the people still have them, since the colonists had them?
When did computers disappear and why?
Why didn’t the people go and find AVIAS after the dust had settled?
How did the Star Stones get to be?
When and why did the teaching methods go from teachers to harpers?

If you are looking for old and familiar characters, you will be disappointed. I would recommend starting with a book that is later on in time, so you will get familiar faces and characters that you will see over and over again, not like the one time only characters in this book. The first book anyone should read is Dragonsflight.

I have started reading these Pern books in chronologic order. This particular book starts about 250 turns(years) after humans landed. I enjoyed it. I cannot insert Spoilers, but if you know of these Pern books or like me have only read 3 this is a good way to start. So this is actually the fourth book in year order. A web search can help finding the order which each person wants to read. There have been 23? so it is up to the reader to decide the order publication or chronologic.
